Could Preppers be on the cutting edge if another Carrington Event (1859) occurs. Massive solar flare creating massive currents in the Earth's magnetic field could fry delicate devices, blow out grids and cause destruction everywhere. One large EMP. No clean or running water. No TV. Bummer.

That would sure put the screws to DC knowing where I am and what I am doing. TV wouldn't bother me but I would miss my computer. i'd have to walk to the mailbox. Oh, I do that now. Wait, there wouldn't be any mail but I could walk to it anyway. such is a day in the life of a Virginia mountaineer.

OMG, what would people do w/o electricity, the internet and such? Goodness, they might have to read a DTB (dead tree book), or calculate figures w/ paper and pencil<gasp!>, or spend time just sitting thinking & talking, and cooking at home. Oh woe is us should this occur and we are relegated back to the basics.

CornDogz, you have made my day. I do all those things you mentioned before the solar flare. Does this mean I am normal and the people treating me as abnormal are liars or is liars too harsh a noun to describe these things who lie? CornDogz, do you actually read DTBs, calculate with paper and pencil, spend time just sitting and talking and cook at home. I do all those things and more and I thought I was the 21st century oddball. Are there more of us who do these things? I'm not alone, there are others actually like me? I don't know whether to kiss the ground or hug a tree.

Amish in America would have to teach Americans to live. Might be good. No reality TV. Would be a relief. More prayer? Get back to God?

Nope, not alone at all. I read loads of DTB's. I've a Kindle too but its to enhance my reading experience, not replace it. I rarely use a calculator, and actually write letters too, albeit not as much as I used to. I enjoy cooking too, when the wife will let me in the Kitchen, and since I clean up after myself she rarely complains. I made a grilled turkey & swiss on thick sliced bread, the dense stuff last night, oh yeah. No place could have made one as good, and when the wife makes homemade bread, I'm in my zone. Give me hot strong coffee, my sandwich, a good book and don't bug me!!

This is interesting, but I much prefer events that lead to the end of the world, like May 21, 2011. It was a great excuse for my wife and I to have sex like there was no tomorrow.

Well, feel honored. This kind of solar kill shot is possible and more real than Roswell or grays with tin foil hats. Would make a great sci-fi book or movie. I always think of Dave Berry's comments that the ark was built by a single amateur and the titanic by a group of professionals.

Now all you need to do is convince a bunch of people to sell all their material possessions, and send you the money so you can lead a crusade to save souls, use the money to pay yourself a $1 million/day salary and then, when nothing happens, admit you were wrong and ask for forgiveness.

Absolutely hit the head on the nail. I had completely forgotten that. But we need a date and quickly before the markets melt down. How about May 21, 2011?

It depends on which group of Amish one asks. some actually do those stupid things like ride in cars and cook with electricity. You have to go to the old order, not old but old order, Amish to learn the old ways. Some other groups who still know the old ways are Hillbillies from West Virginia and Kentucky and my people, Mountaineers from Southwest Virginia, Clinch Mountain region to be exact. When the solar flare arrives we will take out our long rifles, put on our coonskin cap and go shoot us a sack full of squirrels. Might bring down a deer or a Bar. Shades of Davy Crockett. I know Davy was born on a mountain top in Tennessee but his parents and ancestors are from Virginia. They's a community in Wythe County Virginia called Crockett and lots of them Crocketts in my territory. See what y'all did, got me off the subject of solar flare. Sorry folks I deviated. it's a habit of mine. give us your best shot solar flare, we're ready fer ya. And them folks in NYC aint getting our squirrels. They'll have to steal from each other. Hae a good day and y'all come, hear.

Hey, CornDogz, you my kinda people. Folks who can actually do thangs fer themselves. Land o Goshen, i'm proud to call ye neighbor. And the lil woman makes y'alls own bread. A people after, I nearly wrote atter, me own heart. That last sentence, give me hot strong coffee, my sandwich, a good book and don't bug me is pure poetry to my ears. I love it. I love it. Hae a plumb wonderful day, both you and your woman and hope to meet ya on the flip flop. Come back. a lil trucking lingo I picked up during my 40 years on the highways and byways.

Congress has actually been looking at funding for hardening our electronic infrastructure. The military/industrial complex's are hardened, but no good if everyone else is toast. Unless you just like talking to yourselves. Wonder how shortwave would handle an EMP?

The last Carrington Effect of 1859 fried the then existing telegraph system. Funny. Shocked telegraph workers and they could unhook their batteries and run off of the electricity that had been generated in the lines. Maybe you meant Pony Express.
