Pit bulls 5, Alpacas 0
#1 Feb 6, 2009
There is more to this story, I found this and pasted it from a NM paper Newsbrief item.
PLACITAS, N.M.- Two pit bulls will be euthanized and their owner will face misdemeanor charges for allowing the animals to run loose and kill five alpacas in a neighbor's yard in Placitas. The alpacas' owner, Chuck Homer, said each of the female alpacas is worth close to $20,000.
Although pits can be good pets, they have a high incidence of aggressive acts towards other animals and people if they are not secured and especially so if they are a "pack" on the loose. Any pit owner who does not recognize this doesn't deserve to own the breed, as these type of stories are too prevalent and damaging to responsible owners.
I would be for an ordinance or such that requires large aggressive dogs of pit bull breed and the like to be kept along the same confinement requirements as that of wild animal permits such as double fencing. Owners must be able to assure the neighbors and community at large that they are responsible!
The physical loss of the five alpacas is close to $100K and the pit owners will most likely be held responsible for the vet care of the injured one as well. I hope that there is some additional award for the emotional loss to the alpaca owners.
