Post those here that seem to be goofy:

- SB66, creating an office of peace
introduced by goofy himself, Ortiz y Pino

- SB52, mainstreet programs
Sue Beffort wants $100,000 for fund this but it doesn't say WTH they are.

- HB127, jazz festivals
G Chasey wants $50,000 to fund jazz festivals in Abq & SF.

Looks like many of the memorials (HM, HJM, SM, SJM) are pretty goofy too. The lunacy has just begun.

jazz festival has been around for years and has dozens of corporate sponsors and offers free events in both cities. It generates several hundred thousand dollars in business in both cities.

New Mexico MainStreet Program is a grassroots economic development program that assists communities in revitalizing their traditional commercial neighborhoods. A program of the New Mexico Economic Development Department, MainStreet works throughout New Mexico to help affiliated downtown organizations create an economically viable business environment while preserving local cultural and historic resources.

Office of Peace??? You gotta be kidding me. Or is this a bill to legalize marijuana?

Jazz Festivals are good, and surely generate more money for local businesses and gross receipts tax than is put in.

No it is not to legalize marijuana. Type in HB66 Office of Peace and it will explain what it is. It is actually a very good bill.

All the more reason for it to be privately funded by those sources instead of taxpayer dollars.

Why wasn't that articulated in the verbiage of the bill? Here's the bill. Talk about obscure and rife for abuse!

FOR THE ECONOMIC AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
AN ACT
MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR SERVICES TO MAINSTREET PROGRAMS.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
SECTION 1. APPROPRIATION.--One hundred thousand dollars
($100,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the
economic development department for expenditure in fiscal year
2014 to provide services for mainstreet programs statewide.
Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of
fiscal year 2014 shall revert to the general fund.

Feel good mediation where all party's sit down and talk about... the weather?? Not something that should be showing up on government radar.

Jazz should not be funded by taxpayers IMO.

it mostly is. This probably covers something related to waiving facility fees. Very small investment in our communities and culture.

is a very established program with a small budget that supports economic development all over the state.

really looking at the wrong things. They need to reform the NMGRT to be more fair to local business develoment. They need to do what is necessary to open the spaceport(I opposed construction, but now we have to make it work). They need to finish the half finished capital projects before approving any more.

Ok, facility fee's would not give me heartburn since its not coming out of existing coffers, but it doesn't say that. Besides, who knows if some other venue would have rented these places so its not like they ~paid~ money out.

One open ended bill that is more than extremely vague. Maybe vagueness is what makes it attractive. Certainly the sponsor either has no clue, doesn't care, or thinks its going to pass, hence the lack of explanation in it. I would think she'd have been a bit more specific in the language.

NM needs a lot of things, prioritizing them doesn't seem to be one the legislature is real good at doing. There appear to be many bills that could do some good so far. Who knows, the legislature is just firing up so there will be a boatload of bills yet to come.

For whatever reason(s) the legislature sure is not tuned into employment by the private sector nor the tax structure that keeps employers away from NM.

The SpacePORK is another issue entirely. Another of those things Billy Triple Chins stuck us with, like the FailRunner. But getting back to bills being submitted...

is that the 100K runs the office to support the program. As I say this is not anything new or something that most legislators are unfamiliar with.

spaceport was a dubious enterprise, but it is there. We are at the point where we either give the tenant a reason not to walk and see if anything becomes of it or write it all off without trying to make it work.

We didn't "need" the railrunner either and an expanded a park and ride bus service would have been much smarter given the distances, small population and dispersed destinations. But it is a really good ride. With more promotion, better connections, more incentives and opening of the Zia station it would be more used. Remember all transportation systems are subsidized.

No argument from me on either point. Won't affect me anyway nor anyone I know as none of us have $200k to blow on a space flight of less than an hour. Only politicians, lawyers and hollywood types have that kind of money in general and will take advantage of those flights.

It will be amusing to browse the bill listing daily to see what other nonsensical bills are introduced.

More goofy legislation

HB16, T Anderson
$50,000 to raise awareness of the submarine USS New Mexico - in NM. Really...

Why would taxpayers want to spend $50k for this? Its not about subs or their mission, its about one sub only.

HB78, M Garcia
$12,000 to create a community bicycle recycling program for underprivileged children in the South Valley.
A noble idea but why spend taxpayer money for it, can't those with a bike they no linger need give it to someone who does? Like at a flea market?

HB-90, P Bandy
A $20,000 study of the feasibility of locating a horse slaughter facility in new mexico to process horse meat for human consumption.

SB80, P Campos
$1,440,000 for the PED to give to charters and school districts so they can purchase NM grown veggies and fruits in school lunches.
----------
Check out SB114, Legislative Retirement!!
