Why is this joker still in charged of the RCSD? He sounds like a complete idiot when he talks, can't even put a sentence together or use the correct words, but he is in charge of the city schools? Time for him to find another job in a different school system,he sure hasn't done anything for Rochester. He has nothing but lip service and the fools that run the city eat it up like candy, sad.

He came from Greece. lol. He was only a Guidance Counselor. And not a very good one at that. Never held an administrative position. Go figure.

Seems to me that Rochester always gets people that can't do the job for which they are hired, why? It sure isn't the pay, they are paid very well compared to the rest of the country.Point being the last fool in charge of the Rochester schools that went to Chicago and fell flat on his face.Great track record for the RCSD and who they hire.Just saying.

Manuel Rivera was good when he was in charge. But of course, he left for greener pastures. I honestly does not think longer school hours is the solution. It's up to the teachers and the students. It has to start somewhere. Closing schools isn't the solution either. How many more schools are they going to close?
All good points and no racist slurs for a change, very good. I wasn't speaking of Rivera,he didn't do a bad job with what he had to work with.I was speaking about the super that Vargas replaced and went to Chicago.

Thanks,I couldn't remember Jean Claude Brizard's name.Question, why does RCSD hire these people? If I remember right RCSD pays these fools right at the top of pay scale in the country.(Forbes and The WSJ)

"These people" if you are referring to outside people, I don't know. I don't know how the school system works. But it seems to me they go outside to find the best qualified people. Never been a fan of hiring outside, but it works go for it. Brizzard used Rochester to further his career, and you see where it got him. Home grown knows the town and the district, and should really be the most dedicated. The jury is still out on Vargas, he's home grown, but he's picking up where Brizzard left off.

How is Vargas "home grown"? Like I said earlier, he was a guidance counselor for the Greece school district for over 20 years. Seems to me that they want to hire a minority for this position every single time whether they are qualified or not. And most have them have not been qualified at all. At least Vargas is proactive, though. But how much of that is a ploy? Longer school days won't matter when the kids don't show up to begin with. I say start charging the "parents" with educational neglect or take away their food stamps or EBT for a child that doesn't attend. That will certainly bring up the attendance rate.

You sound so cold! Many children in the csd grow up in poverty and rely on food stamps! Put yourself in their shoes! Not everyone "abuses the system" like you and pigpen always claim. But you are so high and mighty with a masters degree and does care about others.

How about parents actual get their little ghetto rats into school before we worry about making it longer.

What as the attendance rate last year? In the 60-70% range?

A longer day sounds like a good idea, but if students don't attend regularly, what is the benefit? The RCSD has to find a way to get more students to school on a consistent basis. Truancy is a huge problem and it's what differentiates the city schools from the suburban ones. If a student is missing 2 or 3 days every week, is adding hours to the school day really going to make a huge difference? The Super's heart is in the right place, but he has to convey to parents that kids have to be in school. To use an Obama term, why don't they identify the chronically truant students and apply a " laser like" focus on them? Find out why they aren't at school and get them there. Not a teacher, but it seems like common sense.

Withholding welfare benefits is vindictive. Ultimately, kids will suffer with that measure.
