We keep hearing about costs cutting services needed because of high costs of benefits for towns, govenment, and schools. What we don't hear is what is best for everyone - have these employees chip in more for these benefits, stop depdending on the tax payers retired and/or working for private companies - who have had to adjust and pay more on their own because the private companies won't pay for these rising costs. Why should the town, government and school employees be exempt from this at the taxpayer's expense!!!!

No problem Nesbitt. Do you want your prisoners back and you can run your own jail?

As a Webster resident I think that a review of all the towns spending is just as important!! Not only the police department. I am currently a pro local police supporter, but I to am tired of high taxes. If you are going to make cuts they have include all of the towns spending not just one department.

the town of Wheatland abolished their police dept. years ago. I never see a sheriffs car except in the town parades.

Mr. Nesbitt the Webster Town Super. make a pretty good salary I went to the following website:
http://www.ci.webster.ny.us/
In 2007 he made 83,018 and in 2008 will make 85,508 that a nice raise!
Maybe, I could get a job with the town. Can I get a town truck with a plow to?

Webster residents also pay for quite a few cell phones, you want to bet they are used for personal usage to!
I would like to see a print out of all the calls made from these phones. Then any personal calls should be added up and the town employee should pay it back to the town. It could save the police dept.

Did anyone read the article? This is about Webster residents paying in there county tax bill for the Sheriff's road patrol which doesn't patrol in our town. This is not about eliminating the Webster Police. The resdients and I support them 100% We agree to pay for the jail, swat team, DA, etc. but we shouldn't have to pay for the Sheriff's road patrol when they are patroling in Penfield, Pittsford, etc. and not in Webster. It's call double taxation and it's wrong.

Is the town required to pay this road patrol tax if the Sheriff patrol is not used. Or Just add them to the current Webster police patrols.
Let them sit in Phillips Village thats where the police spend most of the time

Mike,
That is the issue. We are required to pay the county for this service and we don't use it. On your county tax bill out yesterday a Webster homeowner pays $3.05 per thousand to the county for the DA, jail, swat team, etc. plus the Sheriff's road patrol. I agree we should pay for the swat team, jail etc. but we shouldn't have to pay the portion of the $3,05 that includes the road patrol because the Sheriff's don't patrol in this town like in Penfield, Pittsford, Henn. or Perinton. If you asked for them to come and sit in Phillips Village they won't because we have our own force. It's double taxation and wrong for our residents. Why is it that our tax rate of $4.33 is higher than any other towns in Monroe County because we have a local force yet they have the Sheriff's that we help pay for and yet there tax rates run from $1.14 to $2.90 per thousand. Do you see how unfair this is to the Webster yaxpayer?

This a very serious comment that you have just made. I would like to know where you get this information.I can tell you that when I attend highway meetings it's Coke or Ice tea if I do stay for lunch and it's been that way for years.I won't speak for other Highway supers but your comment is pointed at Webster and because we are all in the public eye we are held to a different standard and we know it.The vehicles that go home are driven by employees that are on 24 hour call.Same as the police that take their vehicles home.

Mike,
Vehicles that are taken home by any Town employee are taken home so they can respond to emergency calls be it highway, sewer, police,or fire. Some take home vehicles because they attend several town meetings a week and usethem during the day as well. The Town chooses to provide the vehicles in this case rather than pay mileage and overtime.Any vehicle not considered emergency is reported as income under IRS rules. Some vehicles that are taken home are required by the town to do so.This so their response time is more immediate.

I agree that the Town should get more service and Patrols from the county because they are paying for the service and just as much as the next town, and that they should not be recieving less just because they decided to have added Local Police. But if the town wants to cut costs they shoud disolve their own police and let the county then take on the role they should be doing now.

But the real problem in every body that has a yearly budget is needing increases even when said increase is not needed. I have seen many agencies including Non Profits waste money at the end of their Fiscal years in order to justify asking for incresed funding the following years, this is allowed to happen because of lack of oversight by superiors. A Lot of questions should be asked and a lot of Warning Flags should be flying from waste.

Ron Nesbitt...

Let me ask you this question:

When a serious incident happens in YOUR Town/Village such as the shooting at the Xerox Federal Credit Union Who are you going to get help from beside the 3-5 officers you have on the road to begin with??? The answer is the Sheriff's Office! That incident alone they provided more than just SWAT services. Not only that, SWAT is not a full time assignment. It is made of of ROAD PATROL DEPUTIES who have ROAD PATROL assignments. They just dont sit around waiting for "the big one" Now the suspect gets away from the 3-5 officers who work in your town. Who is going to track him down? Your town disbanded its K9 unit. The answer again is the Sheriff's Office. Now the K9 unit again is made up of ROAD PATROL DEPUTIES who have ROAD PATROL assignments. You can't have the added protection that your citizens want and need and then piss and moan about the high cost of living in the town "where life is worth living". Suck it up and pay your fair share like the rest of the Monroe County Residents do! I'm sure if you look around your office you can save the taxpayers money by turning off the lights everynight. Taking out the garbage yourself. Taking your town car to the garage for its oil change and pay for it out of your pocket. I'd like to see how much the town pays for your health insurance. You sir are pathetic!

It is VERY rare to see Sheriff patrol(s) in Webster. I can only recall seeing them on Empire Blvd. that's it. The Webster dept. has done a fine job. As a resident, I do stand behind the proposed change.

The sheriff has no problem with patrolling Webster. He has the right and manpower to do this. THe reason they don't is to keep politics at bay. If you see the Sheriif in webster doing anything would cause huge issues for the Webster PD. Then residents would question the issue of why do we pay for our own PD. Webster PD and the Sheriifs office have a great relationship. Due to the arrangement, A sheriff's car will only respond to Webster on request or if the call warrants an extra car. Any Sheriffs Deputy can enforce laws in Webster including traffic. But why waste the time if Webster has their own? Push comes to shove, it can happen.

Citizen,
You again missed the point. I said I agree with paying for the K-9 swat team, DA and extra services the Sheriff's provide. I'm saying that the day to day road patrol which Webster residents don't use and are used in other towns we shouldn't have to pay for. So don't mix up the issues. As for my town car i don't have one I use my own car for Town bussiness every day and they don't pay for my gas. As for my health care I pay 20% toward the policy more than any other employee in the town including the police which some of them pay nothing towards. Any other questions off topic you might have?

Why does a town supervisor need to be payed that much ? For that price you could hire 2 of them. That why the taxes are so high.
