To those who criticized the Spiderman movie as something that will cost the city money for police overtime...WRONG AGAIN! Nice try though, Crotchety.

City getting ready for Spider-Man shoot

New York City police cars and taxi cabs are now in a parking lot by the Public Safety Building downtown, ready to be raced down Main Street during the 10-day shoot for The Amazing SpiderMan 2 .

The production, which will start shooting on Tuesday, will close parts of East Main Street between Plymouth and East avenues each day. Already, street signs are down along that stretch, and a casting call involving extras and cars was held Friday at Frontier Field.

Mayor Thomas Richards hopes everyone is as excited as he is about the movie shoot, even if there are inconveniences.

“I want you all to remember that this is a good time,” he said Friday.

However, he and his staff realize that people also need to go to work downtown. So each day by 6 p.m., the city will announce an estimated road closure schedule for the next day.

Columbia Pictures is shooting the chase scene. That means the stars, including Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, are not expected to be in town. It will be mostly the stunt crew.

However, 3,000 hotel rooms are booked at the Hyatt Regency, Radisson Rochester and Rochester Plaza hotels downtown, said city spokesman Gary Walker.

The production companies also are paying for overtime for about 100 police officers and three to nine firefighters each day, he said. The New York Citymarked cars were dropped off Friday and will be guarded throughout the filming weeks.

Matt Cipro, marketing director for the Rochester Red Wings, said when employees arrived at work Friday morning, cars were driving around a part of the lot being used by the movie studio. Cones were set up as cars drove the course until about 11:30 a.m. When the company sets up for a shoot, it will close a specified area of Main Street to all traffic, including pedestrians. There are no planned spectator areas.

However, Walker said side streets will be open to local car traffic and pedestrians, so people who want to catch a glimpse of the action can congregate on those streets.

The Regional Transit Service also has re-routed buses. A complete map and information is on its website at rgrta.com .

Usually where Spidey shows up, so do the creeps like Goblin and Doc Ock.
Maybe while he's here, he can clean up this town.
