Pittsfield's Liberal Democrat Mayor Offers Firefighters Bribe to Keep Drug-Free

How else should one construe an offer of a 4% pay hike in exchange for random drug testing?
And the city employee union still turned it down!

According to Dan Valenti:
'Fire Department Stalls on City’s Four Percent Pay Hike'
THE PLANET heard from a reliable source that the Pittsfield Fire Department’s unionized employees rejected a four percent pay hike offered by the city in exchange for random drug testing. According to our source, Mayor Jimmy Ruberto got so tired of the union’s hemming and hawing that he withdrew the offer.
Our source well familiar with fire department procedures, protocols, and personnel said that “if the city pulled random drug testing, half the department would fail.”
So, are up to half of Pittsfield fire fighters druggies or substance-dependent? Is Mother Nature in the air and steroids in the punch? It seems so, after our not so random pool of internal sources. We will be more than willing to hear the other side of the story, even if it involves many clouds of sweet smelling smoke pouring through the door when it’s opened. We’re sure it won’t be a fire.<<<<<

If they tried it with the police department 3/4 of them would fail a drug test.

First of all you are getting this information from Dan Valenti, who got his information from someone who has no idea what they are talking about.
You are just as much a scum sucking piece of shit that Valenti is. I shouldn't even give you the effort of a reply but I can't stand seeing someone spreading BS about honest employees.
Fact #1: the Mayor did not offer 4% for drug testing. It was less than that.
Fact #2: the FD did not vote the contract down. The contract proposal had hand written notes in the margins. All we wanted was the wording to be clarified before we even voted.
Fact#3: If you know anything about Unions you would know that the membership doesn't vote the same night the proposal was brought to them. The only vote that was taken that night was this: once the contract language is finalized, the membership will vote 7 days later.
The Mayor pulled his offer during this "language finalization". The time frame for all this was less than two weeks. All this "stalling" talk in total crap.
My suggestion to you is this: don't accuse the PFD of anything unless you have evidence. If you find evidence, bring it to PFD HQ and show the Chief. If you don't have the balls to confront us in person then you shouldn't be hiding behind your computer spreading lies and mistruths.

Brave talk from an anonymous union thug.
YOU CLAIM: "Fact #1: the Mayor did not offer 4% for drug testing. It was less than that."
At least you admit here that indeed a raise was offered in exchange for drug testing.
If, as you claim, it was not 4%, then exactly how much are you claiming was offered?
YOU CLAIM: "Fact #2: the FD did not vote the contract down. The contract proposal had hand written notes in the margins. All we wanted was the wording to be clarified before we even voted."
If you are, as you claim to be, so 'in the know', then what exactly did those "hand written notes in the margin" actually say?
Who wrote them, the mayor, the union rep to whom the proposal was submitted, both, others?
YOU CLAIM: "Fact #3: If you know anything about Unions you would know that the membership doesn't vote the same night the proposal was brought to them. The only vote that was taken that night was this: once the contract language is finalized, the membership will vote 7 days later."
That's a mighty weak response both from union leadership and from rank-and-file members especially to a sweet deal offered in the middle of Obama's Depression.
Which Einstein in your union decided to look a gift horse like that in the mouth, or did you guys forget that IAFF Local 2647's president, Tim Bartini, is already on record as fully supporting drug testing and claiming a willingness to negotiate the issue?
Dilly-dallying two long weeks while a plum offer like that was sitting on the bargaining table sent City Hall the signal that your union isn't seriously interested in negotiating at all.
Too bad for you, you overplayed your hand.
All you guys needed do was to agree to allow the city to verify that your members aren't doing junk they aren't supposed to be doing in the first place -- and you get a raise!
You really blew it!
Here's what IAFF Local 2647 president Tim Bartini posted to Dan Valenti's column just five months ago:
FROM: Tim Bartini
April 1, 2011 at 5:35 am
"Mr. Heller, I am the president of Pittsfield Fire fighters local 2647. Where has it been said that the public employees have ever been against random drug testing? In our contract we have a very strict drug and alcohol policy.(it is public record at city hall) We have not had a bargaining meeting with the city since last October. If and when we meet again Im sure we would be willing to negotiate this issue. Im just not sure the city can afford the cost of the testing."

Oh really get your facts straight for once!

Heller, you're a dull bulb if you believe all that Valenti writes. All of his sources are ANONYMOUS, just like most of the losers on here.

Why do you make the assumption that Valenti's anonymous sources (anonymous to us but not to Valenti) are not telling him the facts?
