No we can trust the police to tell the truth. Really!

No we can NOT trust the police to tell the truth. Really! And just because 44 of the 92 comments posted to this topic have been deleted does not suggest that there is a cover-up, I guess.

There is nothing "straight" about a man molesting a child be it a boy or a girl. In fact "all" sexual acts other than between a man an a woman are indeed deviant, degrading, defaming, excessive, unnatural, abnormal, and morally unsound.

Actually, Mr. Heller, I've never referred to myself as a "journalist," but I am an out-of-work political scientist who moonlights as a "reporter" for a daily newspaper.
For the record, I and Benning DeLaMater checked out some of the allegations, but we didn't get very far. Mooney lives out by the camp, and Ben and I both dropped by his house on numerous occasions. I'd leave my card in Mooney's screen door; when I'd check back, the card would be gone.
I did the same sort of stop-bys at Carmen Massimiano's home, leaving my card in his screen door numerous times, but to no avail. I even went looking for him down in West Yarmouth! The first communication from the sheriff to me came in the form of a full-page ad in which he threatened to sue me, but you probably know all about that matter so no point in a re-hash here.
Ben did a couple of unannounced stop-bys at Mooney's richmond pad as well, but to no avail.
The problem with that "story" is that the allegations, and they are legion, allegedly, are of a vintage that puts most of them beyond the statute of limitations for prosecuting sex crimes, even with Massachusetts' far more liberal laws. New York's sunset provisions set way sooner than the Bay State's, for example, but I couldn't find anyone willing to go on the record, for publication, with their allegations. I got close, but no cigar. I also worked on some cops, including retired law enforcement officials with knowledge of the issue, but nothing panned out.
I conducted interviews with several former "kid campers," one of whom provided a particularly disturbing account of alleged behavior by a well-known B.C. figure. But my guy wouldn't go on the record, and why would he ... he's middle-aged, he has a public-sector job and he doesn't want his kids to know what happened to him, etc. It's something he'll probably take to the grave with him.
Some of the other "players" -- the young and mid-teens and even some legal adults -- who perpetrated some of these acts against the younger campers are now dead, very old, or no longer live in the Berkshires.
I do believe, based on the interviews that I conducted, that some of the behavior that allegedly went on out there ranged from merely permissive to downright illegal, depending on the ages of the alleged perpetrators. During a phone conversation with Mr. Mooney, and old bachelor who never married, I confronted him with information I had culled from a variety of sources, including law enforcement officials and former campers. I thought the conversation was actually rather telling, considering Mooney didn't immediately hang up right away and he listened, and rather attentively, to everything I presented him with. In the end, he was polite and declined to speak to me. When I asked him if he ever wanted to tell me his version of events at the camp, he told me "there's no story to tell," or something to that effect.
Another former camper rattled off the "hijinks" that went on out there, which many of the boys came to consider normal, indoctrination-style behavior. What I sensed, and again based on information culled from a variety of sources, is that there was a culture of complicity, in so far that everyone seemed to feel obliged to keep details under wraps or write-off certain things as youthful experimentation, etc. If one person were to go down, everyone was going to go down, so it's in people's best interest to keep their pasts in the past and all that.
On subsequent trips out there, whether to cover structure fires or one particularly disturbing railway death, I was always overcome by an unsettled feeling. I know there's a story to be told, but I guess I'm not the one who's going to tell it. Maybe some "journalist" will have the inclination, time and resources to pursue a genuine investigation. Or, maybe I'll retire, secure as many loans as possible, max out my credit cards, dust off my private investigator's license, and go camping for a spell ...

As long as there are victims who are unable to speak of what has happened to them because of the closed, hush, hush, Berkshires we reside in, there will continue to be perpetrators who walk free and are even considered to be pillars of our community. Mr. Berry, I do think you tried to tell a story that has been hidden in shame for too long. Sometimes justice is rendered only when a person has their own life's actions flashed in front of them at the moment of their deaths, only to feel the pain their actions caused others to feel.

Police chiefs, pastors, prosecutors and boy scout leaders protected and shielded child molesters for decades. All of these people would be considered pillars of the community. The shame belongs to them, not their victims. I honestly don't believe any of the alleged perpetrators will ever feel the pain their behavior has caused others. They're arrogant perverts who have been allowed to go unpunished no doubt by police chiefs, pastors, prosecutors and pillars of the community. If they were capable of "feelings" they wouldn't have been causing such painful ones for their victims. So I seriously doubt that at the moment of death deviants capable of causing such harm to others will suddenly develope a conscience. Something they've gone their entire life without.

They never stop abusing. Pedophiles don't stop. So while you may say that is 40 years ago leave it be. A pedophile had an extra 40 years to abuse. You want that person watching your loved one. My statement is for pedophiles in general

Was it really enough to just drop by and leave your card in the screen door, and wait for the phone not to ring? Was it really enough to just do a stop-by? Would long time former sheriff Carmen Massimiano really sue a journalist? Maybe a lawsuit would have been the best thing that could have happened, at least for the alleged victims anyway. Why wouldn't people believe a long time former sheriff and other illustrious pillars of the community, were actually allegedly good church going deviants who got away with doing awful things? There's always a reason for the truth to prevail, even in these dark mysterious Berserkshires. It took decades for the truth to come out that, in fact, Police Chiefs, prosecutors, and pastors protected and shielded suspected sexual predators in the Boy Scouts. Who protected Berkshire county's deviants?
