How did Silver Lake get it's name?

When I was a kid, 8 - 15 this lake was so polluted from the GE plant it had a strong, sickening chemical smell. Nothing lived in it and when we tried to put fish or turtles in it they died.. Looks a lit different now,

Silver Lake never froze over until they started cleaning it a few years ago. It could be -12 out and there would be no ice , just a mist hanging over it.Pretty creepy looking.
