Disappointed by Beacon policy

Full story: Berkshire Eagle

We were disappointed to read in Clarence Fanto's column of Nov. 8 that the Beacon Theater will not be offering independent and foreign films on a weekly basis.

Wah Wah Wah!

Guess what? The next time you pony up seven figures to open a movie theater you can play a bunch of movies that sell only a handful of tickets.

Until then, quitcherbitchen!

Are you kidding me???? Life is full of dissappointments, unfortunately people like you just don't get that... you have the "we're entitled" mentality. We're very sorry that the Beacon isn't going to show films of your choosing. However, they opted to try to stay afloat and show movies that people will actually go see. And if you are looking for foreign and independant films, try the Berkshire Museum.

This is the reason there are theatres
in GREAT BARREN TOWN for people of this ilk
to frequent. As the family member of a
downtown business owner, I hope that the
James M. Ruberto Memorial Movie Theatre
out performs REGAL & G.B. TRIPLEX Combined!
Perhaps the Moskowitz's should relocate to
South of the Border (Lenox/Pittsfield) so
the travel time to their theatre of choice
is shorter.

Mr Stanley has secured a sweetheart deal for financing the seven figures you mention and he has done VERY well showing indie and foreign films at The Triplex.

The Triplex shows indie and foreign films and is floating quite well, thanks

Let us be perfectly clear here. Stanley did not pony up peanuts for this albatross. The taxpayers, in one form or another paid for just about all of it. As I understand it, Stanley actually got paid for allowing the taxpayers to fund this for him. The truth is stranger than fiction. And Ruberto paved the way for him on your and my dime. Look it up and don't believe the first story you get, especially if it comes from city hall.

If you check the new Beacon Cinema website, you'll see that there is both a foreign and an independent film in the first lineup: Paris and The Yes Men Fix the World. I think Clarence's column may have overstated their intentions. Here are TWO screens devoted to foreign and indie films in the first weeks of opening. Now it's up to folks to vote with their feet and go see these films so more will be booked. www.thebeaconcinema.com

Are you kidding me? Isn't there enough Artsy Fartsy theater in the Berkshires? Go to the Museum or to Williamstown if you want to see a Michael Moore or subtitled flick.

The Beacon should not go down the same road as the colonial. I had such high hopes that the Colonial would bring in great acts for all tastes, and yet it is just another venue with unknown talent catering to the Weekend Manhattan crowd.

Is the colonial hemmoraging money? Is it going to need another big shot of GE taxpayer money to heat it this winter?

I for one am excited to learn that the Beacon will offer 3-D movies. Imagine the disappointment of your child when you march off to the mall to see the latest 3-D flick only to be told AFTER you buy your ticket that the mall doesn't show 3-D movies! We learned that lesson quickly. That meant we had to drive to Springfield or Albany to see the Hannah Montana (sigh) 3-D movie. I think the theater should be given a chance.
And as for The Colonial only showing stuff that "weekend Manhattanites" would go see? I don't get that comment. I've been to lots of things at The Colonial that were perfectly suited to the Berkshire crowd -- I'm seeing Second City, the incubator for all the Saturday Night Live people I so loved, this weekend. How is that type of show only suited to Manhattanites?

While I doubt that the Beacon would show "The Yes Men" movies, the theater is opening with some indies on the marquee. If people want the Beacon to show these movies, then we who like them (and travel to G.B. to see them) should patronize them here in Pittsfield. If enough of us do this them there will be more offerings.
We'll see what happens soon.
