Moments ago, I read a blog weighing the pros and cons of living in the Pittsburgh area. There are a disproportionate number of those floating around on the internet, and I find that highly suspect. This particular blog touted and gloated about the Pittsburgh area's "amazing affordability". Perhaps that's an easily sold public relations lie to most people who have never leaved the area, but are considering it. Not to me though.

I'm going to break this down into five simple categories that best define "living costs": Housing, transportation, utilities, transportation, and food. Theses are things that you cannot go without regardless of where you live.

1. Housing. Yes there are cheap houses in the Pittsburgh area. They are in undesirable neighborhoods. Young, professional people are not going to relocate to the Pittsburgh area and settle on a $15,000 house in Mckeesport or Homewood. That's just absurd. The fact of the matter is that unless you want to live in a shooting gallery, a decent house is gonna cost you only slightly less than the national average. Concerning renting, the notion that Pittsburgh is affordable is downright laughable. The average 2 bedroom townhouse rents for around $1300-$1500. Compare that to the "outrageously expensive" rental prices for a like unit in say, LA ($1800-$2000), and the difference is actually rather negligible in terms of real value. So in closing, Pittsburgh rent is by no means cheap. It's pricey actually, and the quality of life in the region doesn't even begin to justify it.

2. Transportation. Public transportation is absolute shit in Pittsburgh. Even the most hardened, sheltered yinzer would agree with me there. As far as fuel costs go, Pittsburgh consistently is slightly above the national average. Add in the awful traffic and road conditions (which translate into a LOT of wear and tear on a vehicle), mobility in Pittsburgh comes with a pretty hefty price tag. Don't even get me started on the parking issues downtown.

3. Utilities. This isn't rocket science. The abysmal weather makes for more energy usage. Comcast cable sucks balls as well.

4. Food. Sorry folks, but Iggle ain't got nothing on Publix. My grocery bills are consistently higher here if I patronize S&S or GE.

In conclusion, I just don't get it. WHAT makes this place "affordable"? Is it the fact that I can buy a house for 15k in the ghetto? I could do that in Detroit or Cleveland. Who cares? Why tout this whole "affordable" thing if it doesn't really exist? It just doesn't make a damn bit of sense.

We're relocating from Denver. Nice homes in St. Clair or Mt. Lebanon are going for $300k, they would easily fetch 500-600k here. We're excited!

Good gawd, woman, if you're too stupid to figure out Ranter is a notorious troll on the Pittsburgh board (even when someone already pointed it out to you), perhaps you'd better stay away until your judgment matures just a wee bit, eh, lassie? That, and when your grasp of the rules of capitalization improves a bit, as well.

Who the hell do you think you are talking to lassie. What are you talking about i said after what i just read i am re-thinking the issue. However i am very mature and well educated and i do not believe i came on here to get your two cents.Just because Charlie Sheen is ranting and raving about people being stupid trolls guess you had to jump on the band wagon. Here comes the peanut gallery if you have nothing but ignorant things to say to a stranger over a computer then i feel sorry for you.Your sound like your just a miserable coward. My mother in-law is there and has cancer and we wanted to be closer to her.Not that i need to explain anything to you.I have never seen anything that Ranter has posted before because I do not spend my life on here.Although if you live in Pittsburgh than all the more reason I think I would not want to live there. You see its people like you that causes new people not to want to come, not anything Ranter has said.

Oh, my! Is our little Taryn upset? And you most certainly don't have to explain about your mother-in-law's illness to anyone; it's quite personal, and I really don't care... but explain yourself, you still do. Issues of insecurity, my dear? And if you really don't want to come to Pittsburgh, then don't, dearie... we're really hoping for a better quality of person than you apparently are. Too much anger and vitriol for the kind people of this city!

Trust issues as well, my dear? So sad! And are you a member of Jimmy McMillan's the Rent Is Too Damn High Party? He's amusing... unlike you, unfortunately. And you're wrong, too, dearie; Pittsburgh housing costs are well below the national average, and quite competitive. It's one of the reasons we so frequently top best places to live lists.

See what you cause, Ranter. You caused the claws to come out between two people. I hope the claws are retracted and no one got wounded. If wounded, put healing salve on the wounds and continue on. I have a cousin who lived for years in Mt. Lebanon and he and his family liked it but his job transferred him to the Atlanta area. He's a Ford executive. Later gator!!! Keep your cool.

Tell me how exited you are once you haven't seen the sun for eight months, your neighbor breaks into your car for loose change to buy some stamp bags of heroin, and you've been heckled repeatedly for formerly living in a city that's home to an NFL team other than the Steelers, regardless of whether or not you give two shits about football.

Tell my how exited you are once you've visited highly-acclaimed Station Square. Only to discover that the shopping area consists of six stores full of cheap Steelers junk, one tobacco store, and one store that sells bars of soap.

I could go on and on. Save yourself the three hundred grand and throw a Pittsburgh party at your home in Denver, to see if you like the ambiance. Here's what you'll need to do:

1. Invite all your friends, and intoxicate them with PCP to mimic the stupidity and aggressiveness of the average Pittsburgher. Make them all wear Steelers shirts. Make the women wear black slacks and orthopedic shoes, and the men wear acid washed jeans and white tennis shoes.

2. Make a mix cd of Led Zepplin, Donnie Iris, Styx, and Journey songs. Maybe 25 songs total. Play this on a loop throughout the duration of your party, to mimic the type of radio programming that you'll be subjected to on a daily basis in Pittsburgh.

3. Buy a few dry ice machines, put them on the roof of your house, and pump a layer of gray above your yard, completely blotting out any sunlight whatsoever. This is what the sky looks like in Pittsburgh almost everyday.

If you like your party experience, then you'll like it in Pittsburgh.

Ah, outta Dormont is certainly correct!

"Jimmy Franks" is the little turd of a troll with an anti-Burgh facination that is probably based in a lack of self esteem and self-loathing. And there is good reason for him to feel so.

So please don't watch his videos, and so don't feed the troll. It's truly sad that his only source of personal affirmation is to seek it anonymously on the internet.

It's a well-established fact that I'm a self-proclaimed troll. Now, let's discuss my lack of self esteem "and" self-loathing. First of all, low self esteem can be defined as self loathing. The two are not mutually exclusive, so there wasn't a need to for you to double-up on the verbage. That's like saying "Tom is a racist. He hates black people". Why is it that Pittsburghers constantly have to re-state everything they've just said? Could this possibly be an explanation to the grating ending of most yinzer sentences with the slang term "n'nat"? Hmmmm. Have I, Jimmy Franks, unraveled a true mystery of Pittsburgh, even more epic than Sienna Miller's unbiased opinion that the city of Pittsburgh is a dreadful shithole? Perhaps. And it's all been made possible by my incredibly high IQ, and the fact that I totally rock on all fronts.
To retort your statement, I don't suffer from a lack of self esteem. What I DO suffer from however, is a lack of sunlight from living in your shitty city. Being that I'm a believer in a higher power, I can only deduce that God himself hates the city of Pittsburgh as much as I do, which is why he's elected to urinate upon it on an almost daily basis.
Thank you for reading, and may God have mercy on your fat yinzer soul. Good Afternoon.

-I absolutely rest my cast. The above paragraph is an excellent representation of the kind of pathology on full display in southwestern Pennsylvania. It's the same kind of idiocy that yinzer piece of shit John Steigerwald displayed last week, and thanks to the internet...the rest of the world can finally see what an absolute ass pit of a city this is.

Nobody who's ever left has anything nice to say about it. Trent Reznor, Christina Agulara, Sharon Stone.....all hate Pittsburgh. Hell, Andy Warhol would roll over in his grave if he knew about the museum. He HATED Pittsburgh even more than I did when he was alive.
