Wal-Mart ditches plan to build store in East Hills Shopping Center

A decision by Lowe's not to open a store in the former East Hills Shopping Center prompted Wal-Mart officials to scrap their plans for a store there, a company spokesman said Wednesday.

If you all remember. I told you that the only way this would happen is if a retailer needed a store to train loss prevention employees. Otherwise it's a really, really bad idea to throw good money away.

Lot of negativity on this thread. I will bet WalMart took note of this type of "community support" when making their decision. Walmart could have pumped a lot of tax revenue into the community. Instead the burden will fall on the middle class homeowner like me. Thanks Guys.

I approach everything with a cynical non-trusting eye. The really scary part is the number of times that I'm right. It even bothers me that our politicos are so predicable.

I've paid taxes for 60+ years, watched things slowly die and deteriorate in our city. With only a couple of constants, the flight of the taxpayers, the decline of the schools, and the Democratic party.

The best government is one that fears it's people. The recent snow storm shows that the government we have clearly couldn't care less about the residents that are left. It's the suburbs that they want to tax. Almost to the point of obsession.

I couldn't agree more, which is why I will never live in the City proper. But how do we turn things around? Good paying industrial jobs have been going overseas for years, now the white collar ones.

They're partisan politicians in local government... do you expect them to be anything other than predictable? To actually think for themselves?

I'm not sure a government should fear it's citizens, but the people should never fear their government! And that government should never be permitted to invade the privacy of it's citizens with warrentless searches, or wisk them off to foriegn prisons. When governments have encroached upon the civil liberties of thrit citizens, it has always been under the guise of protecting them from foriegn enemies. The Bush-Cheney administration is the best example of that evil.

And the February snowstorms prove nothing about the fundamental attitude of the city govenment toward it's citizens... that's just more of your senseless hyperbole. But the bizarre pivot in your reasoning on that point to the taxation of suburbanites was amusing.

I bought a house about a mile from the East Hills center 6 months before they announced they were going to put in a walmart and lowes. man made my day when i heard that, but i knew it would never pan out. i had been looking for signs of work the past year or so and nothing every seemed to be happening, now i know why. I remember the old shopping center from back in the 70's and early 80's and how fast that went downhill. not like the people have changed or the area has gotten better since then. you still have the hood all around there. the place would have been stolen blind. maybe old cynic was right, walmart could have used the store as their national center for training employees on loss prevention. armed guards at the doors wouldnt be good enough. maybe in 20 more years we will have better luck.

You can't find one documented example of Bush/Cheney whisking a citizen off to a foreign prison. I might add that the chosen one has kept these tools, as well as the prison in Cuba. You simply cannot live in the city proper if you haven't heard and seen the disregard for the citizens who actually live here. As soon as the snow emergency was over the need for more taxes came flying out, and where do they want to get them? The payroll of the non-profits.(With a sugar thing as a diversion) Guess what? Most of the employees who work for the non-profits do not live in the city, they live in the suburbs. Guess where Opie wants to save his relatives pensions? Yep the suburbanites, those hated, ex-Pittsburghers.

You realize that the party in power has to get state approval for all taxes. They have screwed up the city so bad that even the honorable politicians at the state level can't trust them.
