I don't understand how people can expect you to love and survive on $8/hour. They think they are doing you a favor by paying more than minimum wage! One employment agency promised me $14/hr jobs and called to tell me they had a $8/hr job 35 miles away from me that would last three weeks. That's not even worth it because of the time I'd lose missing phone calls and interviews.

I know the economy is bad, but why put out new ads for 30 positions (at the same company) when you're not going above $10/hr. In the long run isn't it better to pay half as many people twice as much? Are there any "good" companies to work for in Pittsburgh that at least offer a living wage?

Google has an office in Pittsburgh, you could apply with them.

Penndot will pay, I hear those flag ladies make $15.00/ hour ;)

It's tough getting on with Google, unfortunately. And I am not sure what the flaggers make, but it is at least $15 an hour. But you must get those jobs through the union or know somebody. It's a highly politically charged environment.

Kate is right. One simply cannot make it on such low wages.

$8 an hour is not a living wage in the da' Burgh; even the city was considering living wage legislation a few years ago that pegged a "living wage" at least $10 an hour!! Try one of the Marcellus Shale drilling companies... they're supposed to be the regions salvation if you believe the lobbyists who bought our state legislators.
Good luck

I left the Pittsburgh area due to the job shortage a while ago. There used to be a few barge companies and steel fabrication Co's in the scottdale uniontown area, not sure if they are hiring or if they still are there but it may be a start..
