It took this violent act for Pgh politicians to now say that it's time to consider passing legislation to demolish abandoned buildings? Ohhhhh, please! Now??? Residents' complaints fell onto deaf ears for too long. Better late than never...if it happens. Actions speak louder than words.

A sexual assault occurred in a abandon house, so now the house is the problem. Officers were killed with a assault weapon. so the weapon is the problem. People are run over by elderly drivers who mistaken the gas pedal for the brake pedal. so the car is the problem. Sorry I must be stupid.

I agree w/ you. Responsibility... accountability... where have they gone? We held my children accountable when they were wrong -- stealing, using drugs...just two examples. They are sooooo grateful that we loved them enough ... that we didn't blame others or deny what they had done. They made those decisions. As a result of our tough love, they are helpful, caring, loving people worthy of the title of adults. They practice paying it forward.

You're right about accountability, but the problem with abandoned houses is that they are accessable to anyone who might have any purpose in using it. I moved here from Kansas City, Missouri, where we had a lot of crime and even more abandoned houses. In these houses there are squatters, which wouldn't be so bad but they aren't generally the down on your luck faces that we would like to put on homelessness. More often the houses are used for selling and using drugs, prostitution, gang activity, teenagers hiding away to get drunk and other thrill seekers who could get seriously hurt. The houses also attract vermin (rats especially) and look awful which make the property values around the neighbourhood drop and frequently make living in said neighbourhoods generally unbearable. The problem may not be the houses as much as the people, but if thy right eye offends thee....
