I live in Middlesex Borough and i was a victim of Hurricane Irene. On August 28th, 2011, I contacted DeShields Tree Service for emergency tree removal after Hurricane Irene caused a tree to uproot and fall on my house. The company was hired to remove the tree off the house as well as to grind the tree stump and roots back into the hole. It's way over month later and they have yet to come back and finish the repair. I was told by the company that they needed to wait until the ground was dry before they came back to grind the stump or my lawn would be destroyed. After there was a period of time without rain, I called the company and left many voicemails. No one ever returned my call or came back to finish the work that was already paid for. As a result, I am left with a very large tree stump and a huge pile of dirt roots etc that is 14 feet wide by 10 ft high. I was very upset and but thru a friend, I got the cellphone number of the shop foreman,Jose, and decided to give him a call. He came to look at the stump on Thursday October 13th and said he would have his mechanic come back the following day with the machine to grind up the stump. He never showed up or even called to cancel. Not very good customer service, huh? I was then told the mechanic would show up the next day but Jose refused to give me a time. No surprise there that the mechanic never showed up that Saturday. It was only after I called Jose that he told me the machine needed to grind the tree was broken but he would have the part to fix the machine by Monday, October 17th and promised me his mechanic would show up then. Unfortunately, this was not the case. No one showed up so I had to once again call and was informed they cant get the part so they are renting a machine and would 100% be there the following day. I asked if he was certain because I was making specific arrangements so someone would be home. Jose said the job would definitely be completed the next day. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt but no one showed to finish to the job or bothered to cancel. This time when I called Jose, he had no explanation but advised me to talk to owner Ira but neither Ira or his partner Cathy return my calls. Cathy only called me when she wanted her money. On the invoice received on August 30th, it says payment due upon completion of work. Even though the work was never completed, Cathy was harnessing me for the money. So I payed her $3250.00 for the work. BIG MISTAKE! She got her money and now will not come back and finish the job. i have contacted the better business Bureau and have yet to have this issue resolved. Please pass this information on to anyone needed tree removal service. By the way, has anyone here ever used Deshields Tree Service 2609 Hudson St, Piscataway, NJ 08854

Wow! I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with DeShield's. I used them for a job several years ago, and everything was done to my satisfaction. I have a tall canopy of trees in my backyard and several trees in my front yard. They removed 1 dead tree, trimmed back all dead branches in the backyard, and trimmed 2 trees in the front. I just Googled them to get their number for some work I need to have done now. When I did, your comment popped up. Hmmmm... I'll have to think about this and also ask some neighbors for referrals.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It's one thing to make a mistake - nobody's perfect. But, if what you say is true, there's no excuse. At any rate, I never pay for a job I'm not happy with.

If you go to this website, i posted pictures of the huge dirt pile and tree roots Deshields left on my property. They were paid to remove this. Even though you used them before, I would think twice about using them again

I used deshields tree service a few years ago and was highly satisfied, I actually was googling the company name to use them again. They took out two trees grounded the stumps, and took away any debris in one day. Sorry you weren't satisfied but they've been good to me.

I have used DeShields many times over the years, and always call Jose for any job, and he has always come through for me and others who I recommended. Sorry Jennifer you had such a hard time. You could always go to small claims court in order to get some redress.

I have used DeShields Tree Service several times. They are great. I have never had any problems with them. I also had trees fall down during the storm. I couldn't even get out of my neighborhood due to the amount of fallen trees. Deshields were the first company I called. Unfortunately, during that time I was told that the company was very overwhelmed with work. I did follow up a day or two later. It might have even been longer but I was able to get them to come out and remove all the fallen trees and debris. They did an excellent job and I do believe that because of uncontrollable circumstances you cannot hold a company accountable.

Jennifer from years ago did hire DeShields and we came immediately after Sandy as she had a tree literally on her home and through her roof as many others did. She was given an 2 estimates. The first was for the tree and the second for the stump grinding. She was told that the stump could not be ground out for at least a few weeks as the ground was soaking wet. She understood and gave us the go ahead to remove the tree. I explained that we would collect payment once the tree portion was removed. We would not collect payment for the stump grinding as it would not be done, hence, the 2 estimates. She Agreed. We initially removed the tree and then came back a few days later to finish as many many people had emergencies as well. I called to collect payment for the first portion of services and was told they didn't have the money because they had to pay someone immediately to fix the hole the tree had made in their roof. They then proceeded to tell me they had to wait for their insurance company to reimburse them. Well, as a business what are we to do? We waited and eventually 2 weeks later a check was written for the tree work DONE. JENNIFER NEVER PAIS FOR THE STUMP GRINDING SHE CLAIMS WAS PAID. I explained that the stump would be ground out but I would need payment that day. Truthfully, I was in no rush to get to it as this family had already taken advantage of us. I could not get an answer as far as immediate payment so we never ground the stump. Then I got a call and a letter from the BBB. I responded with the same story as I just wrote. That is the last I heard. So, as far a small claims court, she never went because there is no case. Her mother wrote the check and I have a copy to prove that they never paid for the stump grinding. I think local small business owners should get a website to list all the customers that have wronged them.
