Did you see the article in the Daily Press where Capt. Steve Reese (SCPD) claims our local gangs are not involved with drugs? Either this man is as dumb as he looks or on the take. I sent the article to Gary King.

Actually, I only came here for school and I'm moving for grad school. My reason for moving has nothing to do with what I dislike about Grant County. I merely expressed that I think high teen pregnancy rates are repulsive and indicate a great level of irresponsibility and degradation in society. I'm not sad to leave behind such a strong culture of babies having babies, not to mention the corruption and incompetency in other areas of Grant County. You accuse me of having baggage, but you are the person who practically wrote a novel in response. Obviously my post hit a sore spot. Sorry.

I'd like to know where exactly you think you're going to avoid this? Don't move to the east coast because you won’t find it any better there, just a lot more expensive. And don't move to the west coast, that's where we're from, it's a lot worse over there. And, it's a whole lot more expensive. And don't move to middle America, unless you really like red necks, lot's of meth, and Rush Limbaugh. You could go south, into Mexico, see how that works out, or north, into Canada, if you really like cold, or check out some other continent. I hear Afghanistan is nice. The fact is, our world has become more violent, more drug infused, more sexually deranged, and more immoral from what it was just a few decades ago. In addition, we now have communications technologies that keep us much better informed, and, like this forum, allow us to interact and express ourselves in a public, yet anonymous way. By doing so however, we become more involved, we dwell on issues, fixate on them. Lorenzo got locked up on Wednesday. In the old days we'd have heard about it on Thursday, perhaps said something, and by now forgotten about it. Instead here we are, still in active dialog. I believe it makes more sense to understand and accept the world for what it really has become, even beyond the borders of Grant County, and if you're going to move, do so with the mind set of really wanting to be at that new place, rather than just getting away from this one. Otherwise, your new home won't prove to be any better, and whatever baggage you brought here will show there as well. In the end, no matter where you are, make the world a better place in the sphere that surrounds you, and it will be a better place for all of us.

Well, you're suggesting a few things here that'll be interesting to reflect upon. For one, you're proposing that corruption and incompetency are unique to Grant County and that you won't encounter them elsewhere. A poor assumption. Two - you're implying that high teen pregnancy rates are also unique to Grant County and that you won't encounter them elsewhere either. There may be such places, I remain curious to know if you'll be moving to one? Three - you conclude that I've,“accused” you of,“having baggage,” which indeed may be true, but given that I know nothing about you I could hardly make such an assertion, for which reason I authored my earlier post to “you” and everyone else with an internet connection, defaulting my words to the third person. I won't ask why you so quickly took the image of having baggage so personally since frankly, I don't really care. But you might give that question some thought on your own. What's particularly intriguing though is your remark about my having,“written a novel,” from which you deduce you've hit a sore spot. As it turns out, during my grad school years, back in the 70's, we actually read novels, and they were all longer than a paragraph. This recent perception that any expression longer than 140 characters constitutes “a novel” is apparently a casualty of the twitter age. Though in my day, we used to rag on Readers Digest with the same sentiment,'condensed books for condensed minds' we’d quip. Aha yes, but one more facet of the world we now live in. So, I'll work on that, meanwhile perhaps we should inform Topix that their 4,000 character limit is completely unnecessary, from here on 140 letter will do quite nicely. Oh, by the way (which in case you don’t know is another way of saying BTW), you never did say where you intend to move, which is after all the question actually asked. Rather you deduced some erroneous conclusions, attempted to psychoanalyze the baggage thing, justified your reason for moving which nobody asked you about, and followed all that up by expressing your displeasure at having to read so many words. And you're looking to grad school! Well, if I may be so bold as to inquire, what's your field dear reader?

Wow...you are obviously a loony. I never said corruption and incompetency was unique to Grant County. I proposed that it was quite high within Grant County. Obviously, it is not unique to Grant County. I might be young, but I was not born yesterday. Likewise, it is obvious that high teen pregnancy rates are not unique to Grant County. One needs only to look at governmental statistics to see this exists elsewhere (though NM is #1 in the nation). A high teen pregnancy rate is simply a good indicator of other problems existing within our societies. With that said, I refuse to respond to you again. Your arguments are completely illogical and you seem unstable. Take care.

I saw that article. He also said there was no gang problem and then cited that some Las Cruces motorcycle gang didn't hang out here. He is a clueless twit and in full denial. The gang problem we have is with Mexican youth gangs, NOT motorcycle gangs. Of course, when you tell the police that, they go into full denial.

The sharing of ideas and even their misunderstandings are as important to intercourse as to learning and growth. I appreciate your thoughts and our correspondence, and I wish you the very best. You take care as well, you seem like a good person. And. no I’m not really a loony, though I have been called controversial...

in our defense we would be #2 if the District of Columbia were a state.

Wow...I am actually touched by your response and I do not mean that sarcastically. Forgive me if I came off rude at all. By the way, I'm a history major.
