From what I have known about Cougars, they only attack if they are old and have broken teeth as they cannot keep up with their usual prey or if they have rabies. They did not give much clues to say if the male they killed had any human DNA or not, in order to rule it out as a "suspect". To keep killing cougars to "be thorough", seems to be more random acts of violence and out of fear. It is guilty by association, just because it is a cougar, in the area, it is guilty. If it were of a racial decent here, it would be considered "profiling" and would be considered an unfair way to gage whether or not that was a fair way to target that specific animal for destroying. When people are out in the woods, we are in THEIR territory and WE are in their back yards. Unfortunatley, when the two worlds overlap, it is hard for animals to understand invisible boundries. If this man was more coginzant of the fact that he was in a rural area, he would have taken more precaution and been more aware of his surroundings. Having a dog around for one is a great deturrent and warning system.
But to keep killing because it also was a cougar, that's 2 dead now. If they find a third in the area, is that one marked also?

It goes to show you that human beings are the most destructive and intolerant of all the species that populate this planet. We want everything at our convenience. We want to "commune" with nature, live out in the woods without the critters that where there first and do only what is natural for them. I am sorry that a person lost his life, it is a tragedy, but when our world collides with the natural world, the outcome is the same, destroy the animal. As an "unintended" consequence a black bear had to be also destroyed. That is the human animal for you, everything in his/her own terms without acknowledging the natural world.

Why do they have to kill them??? What happened to capturing and relocating...maybe to a zoo?

They don't care about relocating any animals. The first thing they think of is getting their guns and off they go to see who can find it and kill it first. It's not the animals fault that humans decided to move into there land. know all together there are four animals dead ond one horse hurt. Leave our wildlife alone.

Sounds to me like someone needs to take better charge with Wildlife Services. Their job is to be to protect the wildlife here in NM and to act as a mediator for the public. Instead, at least according to this story, Wildlife services can't seem to understand that that there are ways of safely and humanely moving animals. The two cougars were killed. The black bear had to be put down after it was injured during capture. What the hell are they doing? Isn't it their jobs to ensure the conservation of such wildlife in out area? I'd rather not call them if I had a problem, because their way of handling these problems is absurd! I'm surprised that PETA hasn't been up their butts yet.

I agree whole-heartedly with all four of the previous comments. This seems to be an excuse for people to just kill a cougar and feel like a real big deal for doing it. Anyone with a brain at all knows that cougars do not typically attack a human. When is the killing of cougars going to stop now, after they have been completely anhilated? Like the wolves before them? I am ashamed of the ignorance being displayed by the people killing the cougars. But then, maybe I should expect it..

This is just the most pathetic, ridiculous, absurd, thing I've ever heard of. I agree with all the comments above! Yeah, why don't we just go out and kill every cougar we can find, because, hey, that would eliminate the problem completely. Just absurd that these cougars had to be killed!

I doubt they had much choice. From what I have heard someone was feeding the lions raw chicken to attract them to come around so they could look at them. When people start feeding wildlife they interrupt nature and create a dangerous situation. A lion or a bear that has become accustomed to being fed is very difficult to rehabilitate and unfortunately for the animals it can make them dangerous and leaves no choice. A fed animal will travel back to the original area sometimes hundreds of miles or even find a new source of people food- dumpsters, poodles, etc. The real ignorance lies with people feeding wild animals!

I have seen the same postings over and over. If YOU want the cougars life spared please set up a foundation that you can donate to so YOU can pay for their relocation. When they kill another human YOU can pay the liability! No need to thank me for solving your problem. I am glad to!

These people need to be hung out to dry. What they did was uncalled for and they should be held accountable for there actions.

I can understand putting down a cougar that has killed a human, as once it loses it's fear for man, it is likely to do it again, and knows it is easy prey. A child will be an easy target then, dogs, etc. But to not have a limit, and now a breeding pair has been totally removed from the cycle of nature is unconsciounable. If they were to be relocated, it would have to be so remote, as it indicated their territory is 60 mile wide radius. There has got to be a better answer than to keep killing indiscriminantly one, two, or more "just to make sure" we got the guilty one. It doestn't work that way in our judicial system, but I guess animals don't get a fair shake.

Same goes for the killing of our thouroughbred race horses, pregnant mares, ponies, burros, and all sorts of equine only to be stabbed in the spine and beheaded in Juarez. Need to write, email or fax the governor, senators and representatives to stop this and pass the anti-slaughter prevention act or bills HR503 and S311 that will end the transportation of horses into Mexico and Canada. El Paso is the largest exporter in the world of horses going to slaughter.

Here is HBO Real Sports with Bryant Gumball showing the true story of a young thouroughbred race horse who didn't run fast enough and went to slaughter. This report also shows parts of El Paso and a horse being repeatedly stabbed in the spine in Juarez while onlookers cheered and clapped.
