Good luck with your grandmother. Hope she's not as stubborn and resourceful as mine was. My dad took her keys, she called the locksmith who came out and made her a new one, even gave her a couple extra - off she went. My dad gets a call someone saw her driving, he goes back and takes her spark plugs. She called a mechanic who came out, noticed what was wrong right away, put in new ones and off she went again. My dad gets another call, he goes back and takes her distributor cap and battery - leaves a note where the battery was that said, "Please do not replace, my Mother is not supposed to be driving. Thank you" She called the same mechanic, this time he saw the note and told her about it. She was angry, but she knew if she paid this guy cash, he'd fix her car and he did. I actually saw her driving and called my dad again, and this time he called and had the car towed - then sold it. That was finally the end for her and she gave up. She also succumbed to dementia and no longer knew who she was or anyone else was and passed away at a ripe ole age of 98.

You gotta love the Grandma's and Grandpa's, but when they are stubborn and smart it can be tricky to do what's right by them. My dad knew, as did the rest of us, it would be far worse if he allowed my grandmother to continue driving and possibly hurt or kill someone then it was to deal with her being mad at him.

This is NOTHING about race, so just drop the race card. Illegal vs. Legal people getting a license is also irrelevant here. What DOES matter is that this guy has hurt INNOCENT people! It does not matter about ANYTHING else. If he hurt people (which he did) then prosecute him. My elderly grandma is fighting us right now because we hid her car keys..... I REFUSE to give them back! She is completely unfit to drive anymore. Plain and simple. His family or friends should have stepped in to help him before something like this happens. More people need to be more proactive. If you see an elderly driver being a complete hazard, pick up the phone and report it! I'm faxing in a form today to the FL Department Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to have my grandma's license revoked. Other people out there should be more observant and do something to at least TRY to prevent a problem. Take out a spark plug, take the battery out, hell I'd even take off a couple tires if I had to in order to stop her from driving the car! Its NOT up for discussion. Flat out, plain and simple.
So, for all you folks out there who get cut off and nearly clobbered on a daily basis, call and report them. If their family won't step in, then at least you know that YOU tried!
Again, it's NOTHING about race, immigration status, etc. So please stop with that crap. And it's absolutely NOTHING to do with the president either!(and NO I did NOT vote for him!)

can any one tell me how to get my 80 year old fathers drivers license taken away? he cant see at night so we make sure he doesnt drive at night but he also cant drive during the day. he passes red lights, drives on wrong side of rode and gets extremely nervous when driving to a new destination even if we have clear and simple directions.

You can accomplish your goal in the following way (assuming he is unwilling to do it voluntarily):

1. Try to obtain a letter from his physician stating his deteriorating abilities and an opinion about suitability to operate a motor vehicle

2. Contact MVD and complete a Request for Hearing in which you will allege your father is unfit to drive based on the stated issues and attend the hearing to present the information/evidence (with or without the doctor's letter -- read further)

Although you will be a villian in his eyes, it might save his (or another's) life in doing so. There will be two likely outcomes from this MVD evidentiary hearing: The first is an outright revocation of the license. The second (and more realistic) is they order him to undergo a physical exam by a (or his) physician who would certify him as capable/incapable of operating a motor vehicle (completing the necessary MVD form) and retest in both written, performance and vision exams at an MVD field office to allow them to determine his fitness to operate a motor vehicle. He is already subject to NM's madatory yearly retest policy for those who are 70 years of age or more.

I commend your sense of responsibility to your father and to the safety of the motoring public. Sometimes it's neither pleasant nor easy.
