Cars, bikes to share road during Tour

Silver City Police Chief Ed Reynolds and Grant County Sheriff Raul Villanueva both said Tuesday that motorists need to be tolerant of cyclists during the Tour of the Gila, which begins today and will run through Sunday. Full Story

I'm not sure how much money the bicycleists spend here since they pretty much cook their own food in the homes in which they are provided a bedroom but the people who live here, young and old enjoy watching them. I know in Cliff the students are allowed to wait by the highway to watch them " swish " by. My granddaugher tells me the kids cheer and yell and try to catch water bottles thrown by the riders. When I say thrown by them- it is a good thing- it's like trying to catch candy thrown in a parade.

The one thing that bothers me is that they do not abide by the law when it comes to stop signs or red lights. If I slow down and cruise through, I get my self a ticket. When they slow down and cruise through, we as motorists are told to just let them be.

All of that being said, good luck and safety to all participants, and Silver City and Grant County, enjoy!

And yet if we run over a single peleton, who do you think is going to be seen as the bad guy?

I would never swerve to hit an animal with a car, if i can do so safely i will go to great pains to avoid hitting some dumb animal.
These guys are smart enough to get someone to pay them to tour the world and ride their bicycle how are they not smart enough to follow the rules of the road or even realize that cutting off a pickup truck in traffic could be the end of their story.

So, in spite of an assault last year against one of the competitors who was injured in the crime, they won't close the roads to motor vehicles during the race? Are they asking for more trouble?

They are under escort by LEO, which allows them to ignore traffic controls. It's a race, not a leisurly ride through the countryside.

quite right as far as the event goes.
however that being said, every other moment of the day they are required to obey the same trafic laws that everyone else is. and it should be enforced just as it would if it were me on my motorcycle.

You are very correct on how the cyclists disobey the traffic laws. I guess they think the people out there driving 18 wheelers are it kiss their skillet butts when the park their over priced bikes in the middle of 152 on a blind corner for a chat and some sport drink time out. Even the police knows NOBODY IS ABOVE THE LAW!

The most of us have a life to live and I had to drive to Resrve yesterday ( no it could not wait until today )to check on an elderly father and what a mess. If all the riders weren't bad enough the escorts made it worse. I asked the folks in Glenwood if it brought any money to town- they said none. No one ever stops. Said they just got to pick up the water bottles thrown on the side of the road.

At least the kids cleaning up Cliff look at it as if it were parade candy. Somebody should charge Grant County for the clean up. About the only business that is making any money out of this is H.E.I.!

I hate these GD bicyclists because they're always weaving in and out of traffic when I'm in my Winnebago. I damn near hit one of them last weekend and I hope to hell that they wise up and stay off the road soon before someone gets killed or runned over.

As irritating as the bicyclists are to me, fat ugly people in ther Winnebagos are much more irritating. In the spring going from central Texas to Colorado if you get stuck behind the gass guzzeling Pigs of the Road, you may be slowed down to 45 mph for hours at a time.

That's dirty pool. I'm not fat at all. I happen to have IBS so taking a dump is a real challenge and I've put on a few pounds because of the crappy build up. But once this new medicine works, I'll be back to being slim.

One of the very few things I don't miss about Silver is the Gila Cyclist Showoff and all that it entails.

They spend very little money in town; stay with sponsors so our hotels lose out; have ZERO regard for private property or town citizens.

I had a job that required me to travel out of town on a REGULAR schedule, as I had to meet several clients up past Reserve & Apache Creek. My clients couldn't always change their schedules to accommodate the Gila Cyclist Showoff. Two years in a row I had the misfortune of getting behind them. I finally got to the point where I told my clients that I could not come up that particular week. My client's reactions? They were just as impressed with the event as I.

First, you talk about cyclists or cyclers or whatever they are pulling out in front of and you almost run over them. Then you claim your road pig is so you can take a dump. And I thought texting while driving is dangerous. Perhaps if you let go of some of your "hate" your IBS will bother you less.

I don't hate anyone. I say, "Love your brother." By that, I don't mean I literally say it and I'm not sure that I literally mean it but I don't hate anyone. That much should be obvious.

I was taking a resident to Ft. Bayard yesterday, and the old witch sitting on a chair let 12 cars cross in front of me before she waved me off. I just told her the patients have priority, and she totally ignored me.

I was present at the intersection of 15/32 by lake roberts. I watched as law enforcment and volunteers scrambled to pick up water bottles, energy bar wrappers, banana peels and whatever else they felt like littering. And the only ones that got picked up were the ones that we saw get thrown. What about the hundreds of miles of protected forrest where no one was watching? These team sponosers that follow the racers were driving like bats outta hell passing riders and came very close to hitting the flag holding volunteers. Why do let them come here and destroy our town. One day the reward will not be worth the risk.
