I liked this article because of its throughness and the steps Mr. Lewis has stated on what needs to be done to improve economic development and listing the university as a resource that can be used. Here are his steps:
1) Try to be as business friendly as possible.
2)Businesses need to be the best they can be and get people to shop local.
3)When a business closes, and owners are tired and want to be done, find quality people to keep moving the business forward.
4)"We have to first make improvements and take risks, so people will come.
Step #1 is a crucial step. If customers are treated rudely by an organization's employees, a customer will shop elsewhere.

It seems that Silver City is out of denial and actually talking about the situation with free exchange of ideas and suggestions. Here in Deming, we have not yet come to accept the reality of the problem (which is much more serious than S.C.) and deny how serious it is. It seems that we expect Deming to ATTRACT businesses to come here; doctors to come here and stay when we have little to offer them. We MUST improve our education system so that it can be the foundation for a promising future. We do not have a free exchange of ideas and suggestions because we deny we have a serious problem.

Deming is drug and crime infested to the point that the only buisness moving forward in the area is the ''un-licensed pharmacist'' and the sale of copper wire.

Promoting quality of life and economic development must be about actual infrastructure that affects the whole community, and about supporting business.
New Mexico already has the highest maximum gross receipts tax in the country. This is one of the reasons small businesses struggle to make it here. While the mining and timber industries are only paying a FRACTION of ONE PERCENT on all of the resources they extract from public lands.
Increasing this oppressive tax will only make things harder for small businesses. The college doesn't have to have a new baseball field funded by small businesses
