I'm surprised that a Game and Fish warden would advise someone to back away from a lion rather than to stand their ground, make themselves look as large as possible by waving a jacket or something, and make some noise.

The witch hunt has begun.
The packs of neighborhood dogs on the east mesa have been terrorizing
folks and killing livestock for years and Animal control has done almost nothing to stop it.
Now a Mountain Lion...Well call out the troops we need to hunt it down and KILL the beast..What is wrong with you people? I say lets KILL all the so called pet dogs that run in packs that have raided my chicken coup and have chased kids playing and scattered garbage..These are the real culprets!

Round up your guns and your huntin' dogs cuz we is goin' to round up them kitties!!!! Andrew is absolutely right, we allow dogs to run in packs but now thanks to the drought situation animals are doing what they have to in order to survive and we kill them rather than help. Sounds like typical New Mexico. A man can molest and murder some kid and get put away for 5 years, but wow let a wild animal eat a dog and we're ready to string it up.

Have those round of dogs killed someone? If they have then I agree they do need to be killed too.

All these poor animals want is water. We have controlled burns & fires dumb peploe start. When that happens they have to come down from the mountian to search for water & sometimes food. Because the fires have destoryed the hunting grounds & there souce of water. Why don't we help these animals instead of let's get our guns. You pepole need to take your guns & put then some where. There is enough killing of humans & animals. They are god's cretrues to just like we are. Wake up.

Hey, here is an Idea how about we help humans first! Tons of floods, earthquakes , tornado's and much worse has happened to humans...Why dont you shut your trap and donate money to them that are suffering? I would kill an animal to feed my family any day. If you love animals so much go live in the wild with them and do us all a favor and get your hippi, tree hugging butt out of here!

I like being on top of the food chain and for those of you who dont then go take your children and spouses and dump them off to the wild animals so they can live.

Mountain lion tracks were found in Settlers Ridge off Del Rey. A lot of retirees walk their pups here.

One problem with being at the top of the food chain is that, if nothing controls your population, eventually you overrun your habitat and start dying back. The population will fluctuate over time like this, but the process doesn't care about the suffering of individuals.

If there's a mountain lion, there are almost definitely more of them out there.

Large predators tend to require a lot of ground and a lot of prey to stay alive. The top predator keeps down the numbers of other animals. If we were somehow round up and kill all the mountain lions in the area, is there a chance we'd end up with an over-abundance of the kind of small animals that like to eat your crops?

First off ... very nice area & town there in Las Cruces. Been to & thru there many times as a truck driver. I like to do some hiking & exploring every now & then when I'm on the road as well. Asked a man once in the EL Paso area if they have & have had problems with mtn. lions. He told me " Oh no. Not around in this part. Too dry and not much for 'em to eat here. " Did some hiking in the Jeff Davis Mtn. area ( TX ) about 6 months back and a man advised me to carry a gun & was FULL of mtn. lions ! So what's the story ?
We're loaded with 'em here in SoCaL. And I've come to realize they are MORE numerous than possibly ever before. Encounters are becoming more & more common. I hate to tell you good people of Las Cruces but you're gonna experience more of this until something is done to control the population. Which sounds like it's needed. I hate a man lost his life but there probably will be more problems with these animals before too long again. I read a while back that one attacked a dog in a very busy section of Las Cruces some months back. Then hearing about pets missing. And now ... a persons death from a mtn. lion. See the pattern. It's writing on the wall that a larger problem is on it's way. Same here in CA. First attacks on animals or pets. Then pets missing. Then a child is mauled. Then somebody is killed. It's a regular pattern if you do your research of mtn lions anytime there have been problems like this. Boulder CO area had many problems there some years back. Pets missing. Pets mauled. Kids saying they were chased on their bikes ( some even 4 - wheelers !)... and before you know it one killed a jogger a short time later. Although beautiful, powerful & graceful animals they are also efficient killers. Just be wary & prepared of the surroundings you live in. Sound advice in Cougar Country. Keep Las Cruces beautiful ... love the Organ Mountains !
