This is really sad and moronic. There is no need for violence against bicycle racers. There is no need for all this antagonism for people who are doing nothing to mess up life around here on a permanent basis. They are GUESTS of Grant County. Have some respect. Do you treat your relatives like this when they come to town? You should be ashamed. I hope there is no more idiotcy like this reported.

Wow! What a bunch of jerks. I agree with Local Yokel...you would never treat relatives or friends like this if they were visiting the area. STAY HOME AND OFF THE ROADS!!! These are athletes who work their tail ends off to race at this level. Not to mention the fact that this race takes months to pull off by all involved. To any potential athletes and support team members: I can assure you that these people do not embody the spirit of the greater Silver City area. An overwhelming majority of people are happy to have you here. Please don't let the stupid, immature actions of a few ruin it for you.

Thanks to all those posting supportive comments about the race and bikers, in general. Makes me proud to be a Silver City resident. Nobody (bikers, animals, other drivers)should have to put up with abuse from angry drivers.

It is sad that someone actually acted out violently in this manner toward our two-wheeled guests. I hope this rider (and others who hear about the incident) realize that it is an idiotic minority that they could encounter just about anywhere. This is NOT indicative of our overall attitude toward the cyclists.

I ride my bike around SC and have had drivers throw cans, flick cigarette butts, and in one case pitch a milkshake at me. Iíve had people yell the worst kinds of obscenities at me, while going in the other direction from the other side of the road. Once in conversation with the NMDOT I was told about a road worker who had been hit in the back of the head with a beer bottle. He barely survived following weeks of recovery in the hospital. From the DOTís standpoint bicycles should not be allowed on the streets around here exactly because of these incidents. Appalling as they may be these are not rare occurrences. A friend of mine once observed that some of the best people in world live in New Mexico, and so do some of the worst. We live in a community that includes feral kids who become psychopathic adults. We may not want to accept that but itís true. From time to time we all run across them, in many cases we know them, where they live, and what vehicles they drive. And our legal remedy? According to the Sheriffs at least, we have the right to file harassment complaints, though they acknowledge that doing so may invite retaliation.

Those people are what we call the 10 percenters. The other 90% of people are good law abiding citizens. I can seem like a bigger percentage, due to our small town status but it stays true. All we can hope for is the nasty people of the world to get something nastier done to them, I guess.

There are a few really stupid people on the road. I am so glad that Herbert was not hurt any worse. The drivers that tried to pass the race are real jerks. They should have been ticketed. This is a real boost to the area. Good for the Tour of the Gila!

As responsible, sane and safe drivers wemust share the road and have respect for other drivers/ riders. There are crazies that we must also watch out for and yes some will retaliate but I will still do what I can legally to stop them. I have had some really dangerous things (done intentially)as I am riding a horse near roadways which is seldom but sometimes unavoidable.
The people like that have NO respect for themselves so of course they do not respect others.

we need to throw more than water bottles..these biker jerks need to get off the road and let us the locals get to where we need to go..I live here in Grant County by choice and If I wanted to share the road with these gay wad bikers I would have moved to California. These bikers don't do a thing for the local economy and only make it harder for the rest of us trying to make a living and doing business here. Lets get real with all the bull crap before posting all this chet. Hey Gila girl you must be one of those Lesbian bichhhs that smoke dope down in the middle of down town...go back to California where you belong.. all the positive comments about these idiots on bikers make me sick

Billy Mack you may choose Grant County but it obviously doesn't choose you or you wouldn't be such a SOB.

Dear Billy Mack,
It is closed-minded, unappreciative people like you that really ruin a great thing. I can't help but be disgusted by the language you use and the barrage of abhorrence you have toward cyclists. I hope these words aren't too big for your feeble mind, but the name calling and rudeness just proves your ignorance. The tour has been a Silver City staple for 24 years. I highly doubt you've been around Silver for that long. Maybe the weekend of the Tour you should just take a long walk off a short plank.

It's obvious that you are an ignorant dufous that attacks anything you don't understand.

Please do us all a favor and move somewhere else. It's people like yourselves that gives a good county like ours a bad name....
