To add to your list of emergency items:

Also carry your cell phone.

While it may not work in every area you travel, you will be surprised to discover the areas you might get coverage.(And those areas are constantly growing as cell phone companies add more towers to their systems)

If you find yourself lost or in trouble, first call 9-1-1. It will send your call directly to your local 9-1-1 center. Depending on various circumstances, your phone may be able to send very accurate information as to your location.

Also, please note ... a text message could get through on a weak signal that will not carry a voice call. And ... one last thing ... your cell phone screen can be used as a light at night if you don't have a flashlight. It can also be used to signal a helicopter at night.(If you hear a helicopter at night and you are lost and think they might be looking for you, try to signal then with your cell phone or a light source. They have equipment onboard that can pick up a very weak light or even body heat)

Thanks;

Gary great information. Their first mistake was to leave the jeep. Excuse me their first mistake was they didn't tell anyone where they were going. At their age they should have been more responsible for their own safety. Enough said glad they were found. Thanks to all the volenteers

What's pitiful is your attitude - you get paid by taxpayer money - just do your job. For a cop to say these guys don't deserve to live? What is wrong with you? your job is to serve and protect, if that means finding someone who is lost, so be it.

You are a poor example of law enforcement and the only pitiful thing is that Grant Co. has you working in it!

Thank You Deputy -

Your post is a first rate example of law enforcement in New Mexico. Some idiot stuck a badge on your chest and handed you a gun with that mind set? That's like giving a gun to a monkey. You did more to show the public what kind of law enforcement they have "protecting" them with your post on this forum, than a hundred anti- New Mexico law enforcement posts could have done. Thanks for letting your a** hang out. I am sure it was easy for you.

Again, chill. Deputy is NOT a member of local law enforcement. I have read him on other forums. He is an ex cop. And not from here.

I am related to the couple that went through this ordeal. I find it insulting and hurtful that some of you people have nothing better to do than say mean, awful things about my family members. I think you all need to take a deep look into your heartless souls and reevaluate yourselves. I am thankful they are alive and well and it is a shame there are such heartless individuals that wish they died out there. That is just dispicable behavior and I am truly insulted.

Their first mistake was going out in the boonies in the first place. It takes a lot of skill and experience to go off-roading in some terrain and they were obviously complete novices. BTW....that was NOT a "restored Jeep". Unless it had already been rolled once before and restored. It's nearly brand new.
The biggest mistake was actually rescuing these idiots. The rescuers should have just reported them as dead when they arrived. I'm sorry, but some people just don't deserve to live. What the heck kind of "picnic" is it with NO food and NO water?!?!?! And travelling in an unknown area with no GPS. Real smart. They need to go back to their retirement home in Arizona and stop trying to live a second childhood.
You are a horrible excuse for a human being! Who wishes death upon people they don't even know? That is so sad and pathetic. Do you spend your days reading news articles and writing horrible things about everyone? Sad Sad life you have. This is a great article that I have forwarded to other family members who know the couple. Hopefully they do not scroll down to read your messed up comments as I made the mistake of doing. Douche bag!

No, I am not a LEO from this area. And thank goodness for that. Perhaps you folks are ignorant of the facts, but the people going out in the boonies to rescue these numbskulls are also endangering themselves. It's one thing if a plane crashes and people need to be rescued. That is perfectly understandable and worth every effort. Something else entirely when people do STUPID things that endanger others as well as themselves.
Common sense was obviously left behind when these two twits jumped in their Jeep to go on their "picnic". And we are seeing this same dumb sh** every day. Look at the idiots going mountain climbing and getting stranded. The latest one caused the death of one of the dumba** climbers (no big loss, just thinning the herd) AND one of their rescuers ( A BIG loss to everyone).
Contrary to popular belief (mainly generated by anti-gun Libeals), it is NOT the job of the police in ANY state to "serve and protect" INDIVIDUALS.
Don't believe it? Go here and read some FACTS:
http://www.firearmsandliberty.com/kasler-prot...
So People Are Horrible, are YOU gonna cough up the expense that was put out to help your dumb relatives? Because I am sure getting sick and tired of the nanny state rescuing fools from their own lack of common sense via my tax dollars.
Guess you're jst a lonely idiot that has nothin else to do but comment your ignorance on forums? Tell it to your counselor, which our taxes prob pays for!
Thank GOD for volunteers and good people!
This couple has the right to enjoy this country! We all make mistakes! If we didnt, then we wouldnt know how to do the right thing!
Glad to hear they were found...

After analyzing your statements on this blog and also with Swayze's comments your personality profile shows the following traits.
-You are extremely self-centered with a psychotic impression of your own self importance. You will not help anyone in need.
-You have a tendency towards paranoia, possibly schizophrenia, definitely with bi-polar tendencies. Evidenced by your "conspiracy theory" statements.
-probably single, lonely (inside), bitter and racist. "Thinning of the herd"
-Your life on the blogs shows a huge yet empty ego that is constantly in need of being fed. You are empty inside.
-In your mind you have a need to be Judge, Jury, and (possibly) executioner (again, the "thinning of the herd" statement)
With statements like this it's certainly fitting (if Swayze is truthful)that your working title is "EX-cop". Fired no doubt.
My advice to you is the same as LaJefa1, seek professional, competant help from a psychologist first, then see a psychiatrist. It may help you more than think.
But that's just my opinion.

Lonely...nope. But I am tired of REAL idiots who get all minds of misplaced sympathy for doing dumb stuff. They have a right to enjoty this country. But NOT to do dumb stuff that any grade school kid would know enough to avoid. Let's hope these geniuses decide to do something else exciting like jump across the Grand Canyon on a pogo stick. The herd needs thinning badly in this area.
Maybe YOU can try jumping across the Grand Canyon on a pogo stick! The only "animals" in "the herd" are ppl like you!
Grow up and get a real life!

My aunt and uncle are the couple that was rescued, my mother's sister and brother in law. I am so thankful for so many wonderful friends, family, strangers, doctors, just everyone who was responsible for this seemingly happy ending. I know that my aunt and uncle are beyond grateful for everything.

Jen: That's real nice that you are thankful. How about taking up a collection among your family members so that future REAL emergencies can also have happy endings? I'm sure the rescue people would be more than appreciative of reimbursements in a monetary form for their efforts. Yeah...that may be crass and uncaring, but those rescues cost MONEY.
Why are you so crazy?? Do you seriously do anything else besides write comments on news paper arcticles?? You are so freaking weird and need to get a life!!
