Fasthike, the victim was autistic and was completely unable to prepare himself for this. Even though Fish and Game knew for weeks the cat was stalking folks they did little to nothing. Every little boy in the neighborhood probably has a fort in the creek or near a big tree too just like this victim. What difference does it make what his semi eccentric habits were. This poor innocent man suffered a terrible attack and was unable to help himself. I feel that it could have happened to any child in the community and in a way, it did.

I'm not seeing any comments 'bout this man's bathing & shaving habits? Seems like a rather unique way to bathe and shave to me. Possibly even a little on the eccentric side, and a little out of touch. It definitely makes a difference if you PREPARE before you go into the wilderness. The first and foremost preparation is to be aware and accept that their could be some big cats out there. Thousands go hiking in this territory and never get attacked, probably not too many bathe on a rock though.

He didn't shoot it to accidentally wound it, he accidentally didn't kill it and intended to do so since the lion was actively stalking 5 people at the time.
I am sure they were a tiny bit shook up. Uou call what happened to that poor man the thinning of the herd! If it were your herd you would be grieving by now like his family is.

Nature at work. The thinning of the herd is not always pretty, but it is necessary.Question; How do you shoot something and "accidently" wound it.
Guns are for sissies. If you can't kill something with your bare hands, you've got no business killing it. LOL

Reading the posts on this thread, I find it really tacky that some twerp is using this tragedy as an excuse to push his anti-environmental, anti-wolf, let's shoot the mountain lions agenda. Go back to New Jersey, it's not safe out here.

<quoted text>I accept your apology if you accept mine. I understand everyone's concern about overpopulation, we as animals tend to overpopulate. There are ways of curbing the overpopulation of wildlife. It's called depredation. Big game hunters get this stamp and the money generated from the stamp is used to develop permanent solutions to chronic wildlife nuisance problems. If you want to learn more about it you can get a booklet called New Mexico Big game & trapper rules and information. They also have a website. www.wildlife.state.nm.us
Again I apologize for my conduct.
Okay, I think we're on the same page. It's the one's that DENY that there is any such thing as wildlife overpopulation that is frustrating. Thank for the links!

The only agenda here is comes from environmentalists with their anti-Western, anti-human, let the mountain lions do what they want, fanatical politcal movement. In sociology, environmentalists meet all the requirements of a full-blown holy war.

"Repent! Repent! Or the world will be destroyed!" "Kill the unbeliever! It's not murder to kill unbelievers!" "Shed no tear for the wicked that fall, it's God's will!"

Sound familar?

"Recycle! Recycle! Or the world will be destroyed!" "Kill the SUV drivers! It's not murder to kill murderers of the planet!" "That's what he gets for going into the wild, it's Nature!"

Mmmm, yes, we historians have heard it all before.

I was traveling through Pinos Altos about the time of the tragedy. Had been camping on the Gilla and never saw a mountain lion. Now I watch my back when I am in the wilderness same as I know I gotta do in the city. Cats like to approach from behind I have heard. If you see them in front of you they are not as likely to attack. Kodiac bears hunt humans the same way. You always gotta look behind you, no matter what Yogi Berra said.

Only a real twerp would have a wolf icon in their signature page. Thank you Yankee Yahoo for the defence of some of us who believe that regulating animal populations keeps both animals and people fed and safe.
I had never thought of it from a historical perspective but you are right, nothing is different just the name of the religion.

Wow, I had heard of people like you, and now I guess you are real. I think maybe you are getting environmentalists confused with the hardcore Christian right. Or maybe you should just get yourself tested for rabies.

The folks who live in grizzly bear country would laugh at this thread if they read it. What a bunch of scared-y-cat wimps New Mexicans would seem to be from these posts. But even up north, where they have both large cats AND bears, these carnivores usually leave humans alone. But, when they don't, that's why I carry a 44 mag double action snub nose.

yeah its funny how people expect animals to act responsibly, and then try to hunt them down and kill them when they don't....same as when a shark attacks a surfer.they all jump in their little sort fisherman boats and go out on a shark killing spree...I know when I surfed, once you get n the water..you are in the food chain...I had my share of run ins with sharks...aint their fault..they are just being sharks..

There is no difference between the Christian fanatics, Muslims fanatics, and environmentalist fanatics. See the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) for one of MANY examples.

All I argue for is a natural solution. Humans have always hunted wildlife for food and to protect their food. Fanatics want to prevent even that. Fanatics don't check their facts, they are just passionate about their beliefs.

Here's an interesting article.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles...

Probably more lions now than before European settlement. Resurgence not until 1960's, which explains why people are seeing more of them now, more attacks, and why older generations never encountered them at all.

And we are just being human. It's the natural order of things.

For what it's worth, I am a Democrat, an environmentalist, a gun owner, a hunter and a fisherman. I eat the animals I kill.

Fanatics like ELF and Christian abortion clinic bombers need to be hunted down and put in jail.

LOL, good! And I am a Christian Libertarian that believes in Pro-Choice, seperation of church and state, and agree with you whole-heartedly. I don't call myself an environmentalists because of the bad image they are making for themselves, and because history has shown me that humans, as a general rule, are naturally environmental aware anyway.

All I ask is that people check the facts and not submit to their passions, which many have a bad habit of doing. Passion is for the bedroom.
