Ambulance wrecks, passenger dies

Eighty-year-old Rush Floyd of Millstone died Wednesday night from injuries sustained during an accident involving a STAT ambulance.

Officials say the ambulance had transported Floyd to Logan General and was returning to Millstone when the accident occurred. Mingo County Sheriff’s Department Cpl. Norman Mines said ambulance driver Josh Frye was traveling south on Rt. 65 when he ran into a ditch. Frye told the officer he was unable to straighten the wheel and struck a retaining stone wall around the Elk Creek Bridge, flipping the vehicle. The ambulance came to rest on its left side about a mile from where Floyd was living.

Med Flight was called to transport Floyd to St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington. Officials say he died during the flight.

Mines said Frye’s tail bone was broken and Medic Derrick Estepp, who was in the back with the patient, suffered a broken arm. Floyd’s niece Kay McMillan was traveling with her uncle in the ambulance and suffered bruising from the wreck. All three were taken to Williamson Memorial Hospital by additional responding STAT ambulances where they were treated and released.

McMillan said when the ambulance finally came to a stop, her uncle was hanging from the gurney above her. She said every time she closes her eyes she can still see him hanging there.

Floyd had been living in Chicago and had suffered from cancer since 1996. His brother, Theodore, told the Daily News that Floyd had recently been living with him. Theodore said his brother was on Morphine for the pain caused by the deadly disease and needed the dosage increased. Because he did not have a local doctor, Theodore said Hospice had sent him to Logan General to be examined by a physician who could prescribe a stronger dose.

“I followed the ambulance over to Logan,” said Theodore.“When he was through, I went ahead in order to get his medicine filled.”

Pharmacies were closed by the time he arrived and the 84-year-old brother of the deceased was at home awaiting Floyd’s arrival when he received the call about the accident.

“By the time I got there, they had gotten him out of the ambulance,” Theodore said.“He talked to me and said ‘help me bubby.’ He was complaining of the pain in his back.”

Because construction taking place at WMH, Theodore said Med Flight met the ambulance at Lefty Hamilton Field to airlift Floyd to St. Mary’s.

“I was told he died within five minutes of take-off,” he said.

Floyd was a veteran of the Korean War and received numerous medals including the Purple Heart.

The cause of the accident is still under the investigation of MCSD Cpl. Mines. Also responding to the scene was Delbarton Police Department Sgt. Barry Moore, Cpl. Daniel Slone and Patrolman Daniel Rogers. Along with Mines from the MCSD were Dep. Josh Endicott and K-9 Dep. Chris Endicott. The Delbarton Fire Department as well as Homeland Security Director Jarrod Fletcher was also on location.

Wyoming County and it happens here too. My husband couldn't get out the back door once they got to the hospital, so he had to crawl over and go out the front door - with a busted appendix!!

well i know for a fact that rosie doesnt care because i have heard her myself talk about the crews and how she hated ALL the females that work there

when you ask her for a job she tells you that all that is working there is people with drug problems or drinking problems what does that say for the company

i feel sorry for family that lost a family member in the wreck

but do you think jason or rosie do NO they let this go on she ignores people when they call and i know she has told people before that she dont care what happens with stat but sooner or later it will come back to smack her between the eyes and i hope we all get to watch

This is so sad, you think that when you call for an ambulance that your loved will have the proper care and in a professional manner

I fully agree with the comment about Sims, she has told that to numerous people and if a female calls her from stat as soon as she hangs up the phone the caller is trashed but she doesnt do that to the men

Doesnt matter which office the female works from they are trashed

Would like to send my sympathy to the family of Mr Floyd, we will keep them in our prayers

What exactly happened they are trying to get out of? I didn't see anything in the article indicating wrong doing.

I think what they were talking about, not in this instance, but so many other times the owner(s) of the company has bargained and took hand in wrong doings to cover things up.

You are so right, you have spoken the truth. They always bargain out of mistakes, but this one took a life, but they will all come out smelling like a ROSE!!!

You are also telling the truth about Rosie. She has it in for all the females that work at STAT and it doesnt matter which department they work for. But if it is a male she LOVES them and talks really great of them.

I feel so sorry for the Floyd family. They were only taking a loved one home so the family could say their last good byes, but due to STAT they never had the chance.

Which I heard that Jason was out of town taking a vacation, which that doesnt surprise anyone, if you know this family you know they have no feelings about anything or anyone but them. This also incudes Rosie

17C-5-1. Negligent homicide; penalties
(a) When the death of any person ensues within one year as a proximate result of injury
received by the driving of any vehicle anywhere in this state in reckless disregard of
the safety of others, the person so operating such vehicle shall be guilty of negligent
homicide.

I know in certain states, special circumstances exist for emergency personnel.

Just because you have an emergency vehicle with lights and siren that does not give you the right to speed and it doesnt give you the right to drive in a reckless manner.
My service does not allow their workers to drive over 10 miles above the speed limit.
I have seen the ambulances that STAT has and I have had the opportunity to assist them but I myself would not allow the driver to go fast because their trucks are not safe.
I have seen the ambulances at emergency rooms and I have seen the fluids that they leave behind.
So plese dont think just because we have the flashing lights and the loud siren that we can do what we want and not be punished by the law for something we caused.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Mr. Floyd.

I am glad to see that someone else feels the same, I heard a crew call her and it was awful the way she talked to them.
I just wish that something would be done before another life is lost.
I never dreamed Rosie would turn on the people that work for stat but she has and this has been going on for sometime now.

I have to say that it is horrible to lose a loved in such a bad way, and my heart goes out to the family, but this is in defense of Rosie, I'm a female and I have never had problems with her. I worked for stat and rosie was noting but good to me. And I never was told by anyone else that she talked trash about me.

I currently work on an ambulance have been for a long time, I am not with stat I am with another company but in defense of the ambualnce crew who is to say they weren't professional they may have been anyone can wreck at any time at this time we don't know what happened I can say in defense that we(ems crews) are run 24-72 hours at a time sometimes without much rest at all sometimes longer hours the public have no idea the hours we work and the stress that is in our job many facors could have contributed to the wreck my heart goes ou to the family of the deceased and also the crew they will be ridiculed for a very long time for something that may have not been there fault until we know the truth about what happened I am not judging no one this is a sad situation for all involved.
