At some point, several years ago,Atlanta's over building and out of control delvelopment reached a point of no return.
This has happened now in Buncombe County.

We once had a little "Tea party" over the issue of taxation without representation. I see no difference in this. The areas to be annexed should get to decide if that is what they want.

Forced annexation is just plain wrong. If the city can't sell the value of its benefits to a proposed area, then it should not be allowed to force the area into its tax base.

It seems clear that Asheville looks at the additional areas as a money source to help pay for programs that it has in place, but does not want to pay for.

Really, Asheville and Buncombe should have one Metro government.

Thank God the Biltmore Lake folks have plenty of money to fight this!

Again, this forced annexation, and the state government domination in the matter is YET another example of how the NC democrat controlled legislature has ruined our once great state.

Let the damned mega-bucker Floridiots and Yankee imports in Enka ,excuse me, Biltmore, Lake, pick up their fair share of the tax burden. After all, they can better afford it than we poorer natives who have lived here all our lives and made this area what it is.
They are the first ones to whine about taxes and they're the very cause of the taxes increasing for all of us.
To Hell with them, let them all pack up and get out of here. We'd all be better off it they'd take their cocky, better-than-thou attitudes back to from wherever they came!

Can't the public see what is happening?

The liberals on Asheville city council are scratching and clawing all the money and power they can as fast as they can so they will have as much as they can get before they have to stop.
They are a desperate bunch and seem to leave no stone unturned in their efforts to take it ALL from us.
It is sickening and disgusting to see what they are doing to this community.
They are a Godless bunch and should be treated that way.
I hope there is a very large turnout at the rally tonight in front of City Hall!!!!

Just exactly who is supposed to pay for the strain put on the infrastructure and additional load on services??

Is it fair to "squat" just outside the limits and be exempt from payment?

Is it fair to have the huge appreciation and value without paying a fair share of taxes?

Only a few, such as perhaps the retiree in the example really may be hurt. Otherwise, if you can afford a half million dollar house, you should be able to pay a fair share of taxes.

City Council is not perfect, but it has the hardest job of any council in the history of Asheville. I appreciate their taking a stand for all segments of the population.

As a resident of biltmore lake, I can assure you that if I get annexed, I will do my best to vote out any current members of city council that voted for this.

not all of us can afford the higher taxes. some of the homes were affordable at one point.

Money makes the world go around. You got it and the city wants it to keep the great unwashed happy with their bread and circus. I think realtors should be required to tell new prospective residents of the Asheville octopus and other municipalities coming their way before they put their money down.

Until the state changes the annexation law you're like a gnat to the likes of Mayor Bellamy and her fellow council members. Just remember in November, but like most you'll go back to sleep and that's what they're counting on. "ZZZZZZZZZZZ"!

The 10th Commandment specifically states:
"Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods."
I see forced annexation as coveting other people's homes. If Biltmore Lake and Sardis Road are annexed, the city will appraise the homes in these areas and impose property taxes based on the value of these homes. This action is a "taking" or "coveting" of someone else's property. As someone else has suggested, the state of North Carolina should allow cities to impose sales taxes and hotel taxes as needed so that they are not so strapped for cash. The principle underlying involuntary or forced annexation violates the 14th Amendment which ensures "due process" and the right for citizens to have a say on issues that affect them, especially property.

One more thing. Are you aware that when a city extends its sewer and water lines to areas it plans to annex, that the residents have to pay a plumbing contractor to hook up to these lines which can cost thousands of dollars? The city doesn't pick up the tab; the resident does. Is that fair? People being annexed are often forced to borrow money to pay for these hook-up fees. Some are senior citizens on fixed incomes or working class families with children.

Why would a Sr. citizen on a fixed income put him/herself in this situation? Most 'elderly' I know out on Sardis and near Beaverdam have been there for years and don't need to pay for hook up. Sounds to me like you are describing the natives of that area and not the newly developed Biltmore Gang.

City water has run out thru Candler since before my time. Most houses are already 'tubed' for water and have you seen the price of digging a well lately? Since our new neighbors up on the ridge have built, our water just trickles and you want to know why? They had to dig so deep to get water, they tapped into our little bit which is now serving 4 different homes. Should I make them pay for my new well because they took my source? Nah, but it is my home, my land and I am responsible for it--all of it and if I want water, then I have to get it, ehhh?
