Pine Bluff has had a large black population since the civil war. as the union fought it's way south, the slaves that they freed followed them, to avoid being re-enslaved. After the hard, hungry march from little rock, the union spent some time in Pine Bluff replenishing supplies and fattening up the horses. When they continued south, they left a small group of soldiers and the recently freed blacks in Pine Bluff, to fend for themselves. Houses were built and gardens were planted.

Pine Bluff was a town during the territorial period.

Arkansas had its own Union forces from within it's borders, and Powell Clayton was pretty much the only Civil War Generalv (U) who made particular mention in his logs of the bravery of the Freedmen who, by helping his army, helped win the battle of Pine Bluff for the union.

Its unfair to blame the Union Army for bringing all Black people to Arkansas and not blaming Slavery. Arkansas was one fo the states with the smallest number of slaves, but in the period leading up to the war was the state with the most exponentially rising percentage of slaves. This is just an example of how your omission of facts invalidates your claims.

Taking it even further, the only reason why Towns like Pine Bluff had slaves in the first place is purely becuse of geography.

Loud----I spent 20 years working in pine bluff. I know of what i speak. I have witnessed equipment intentionally broken so the operators can laze. I have seen bad product intentionally run so that operators can lollygag while it is being sorted. I watched Hood Packaging be successfully sued for not giving black workers a chance to advance, by black workers who never signed up for the posted jobs they claim they were denied. Then when one of these workers found another job, he broke every rule on the rulebook, and accumulated twice as many demerits as needed for discharge, before getting fired (his last demerit was for wearing tennis shoes in a steel toe shoe only plant) only to sue the company for unlawful discharge, and win a years wages, because black judge, black town, white mans company = automatic win for the poor downtrodden black man. So Hood Packaging, like so many other companies left town. And, no, they didn't go to Mexico, but Monticello. Nothing to do with nafta, everything to do with a lazy, conniving work force. There are people trying to do positive things in pine bluff, and it could turn around. I lived there 20 years ago, and i see some things that are getting better. But industry has learned it's lesson about that town. No factory can operate with idle workers who get great, court ordered bonuses for getting fired for laziness.

bottom line is that if it wasn't pine bluff,it would have been somewhere else in this state, cause I do not know where we rank now,but the last I saw,Arkansas was the 5th poorest state in the country, but the lottery may have made a jump up,
But the bottom line on anything is,we are the people who vote in the morons who cannot run a marathon yet alone a town or city,so hopefully people will start seeing real people who cares in stead of these robots who say only what you want to hear, stop falling for the words and maybe we can get some people to better the state and other towns and cities

That might be true about hood, but poor work ethic is a problem everywhere. It is still a fallacy and a very unfair generalization to blame black people for all the woes.

I have worked in pine bluff as well, in various industries and plants. I have seen for myself the realities that lie behind osha stadards and enforcement.

What do you expect when you are talking about an economically stagnant community like pine bluff, where the majority of jobs are for unskilled laborers? When you are dealing with a factory setting like Hood (and ive been to the now defunct monticello textile mill......it was mostly mexicans working there) where they hire people with no highschool or college education, you get that sort of thing there. You get people who only prove themselves by their poor attitudes (both black and white people are guilty of this) because they lack an education. It is an absolutely ridiculous assertion to say that Black people and their work ethic is the reason why industry has left pine bluff.

Go just about anywhere else in South Arkansas or Southeast Arkansas and you are going to find the same thing. Monticello isn't al that much different, they still have their problems, but largely the economy has to do with the reason why lots of industry is moving out of the cities, the states and the country.

I think you are inteligent enough whereas I don't have to explain the tennants of capitalism to you and the economics of payroll versus profits, but insudtries are moving overseas....anywhere they can get cheaper labor with less restrictions. One has to praise the Labor Unions of olde for giving us weekends and off days and work weeks and vacations. Industries have to factor in those costs when they select their labor pools, and they figure that the best place to raise a plant would be in a place where they can pay the workers peanuts. Nowadays this is in India, and Pakistan, Taiwan, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and El Salvador.

All of this, meanwhile the USA is falling steadily behind in Math scores, literacy and in almost every avenue of the sciences.

Its not ablout black people ruining industry in Arkansas or in Pine Bluff, its about capitalism's inherant persuance of the bottom line that is running industry to places where that botom line can be more fruitful.

Pine Bluff or Arkansas or any other place wouldn't have so much lazyness, stupidity, and apathy in the workforce (or in general) if we would put higher standards on educational institutions and pump out a generation of people that know the value of hard work. You do that though, you have to have a place for them to be productive, and Pine Bluff's problem for a long time has been the very lacking of a place where people can thrive.

History is also largely based on interpretations of facts and as you seem to demonstrate an overwhelming bias in this discussion, I am skeptical of the accuracy of your claims regarding the Antebellum demography of Arkansas.

Pine bluff has gone the same path that cities all over America have taken, liberal gov. has ruined them, liberalism doesn't work, it strips people of the pride it takes to be an upstanding citizen, PB residents, if you could see a video of PB 30 yrs. ago and compare it to today you would be shcked, I've never seen such a filthy city, the place is like a 3rd world country.

Most U.S. cities aren't as poor and weren't ruined by liberals as Pine Bluff,AR. The people of Pine Bluff,AR ruined the city not liberals.

diane 77, the people and their attitudes, ethics , and morals, or lack of morals, were created by the liberal agenda, the give me attitude, its been an ongoing process over many years, look all over America at the cities who have been under liberal leadership for years, liberalism is the beginning stage of socialism and it just doesn't work, has been tried all over the world and always failed, the only salvation for blacks is to understand what democrats are doing to them, its a very complex ideology, but a simple theory, give a group free things and they will be beholden to you, WAKE UP, look at your family and community.
