Murray Closing Red Bird West Coal Mine

Second recent announcement of job cutbacks

BRILLIANT - Murray Energy Corp. announced Tuesday it will cut or relocate 56 workers and close its Red Bird West coal mine near Brilliant due to what it says is economic pressure from the Obama administration's environmental policies.

"As of today, 56 people work at the mine, but several of these employees were laid off today. At its peak, OhioAmerican Energy, Incorporated employed 239 people," Gary M. Broadbent, senior attorney for Murray Energy, said Tuesday. "We anticipate that the Mine will gradually be closed through late September or early October."

Murray also blamed Obama's "war on coal" for recently announced plans to cut 29 miners' jobs at the Ohio Valley Coal Co.'s Powhatan No. 6 Mine. The Red Bird mine is operated by another Murray subsidiary, OhioAmerican Energy Inc.

Citing excessive pressure from the Obama administration, Murray Energy Corp. is closing the OhioAmerican Energy Inc. Red Bird West Mine, near Brilliant.

"Both Mr. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden stated that there would be 'no coal in America' prior to their elections. They are making good on their intentions while they destroy so many lives and family livelihoods in this area for no benefit whatsoever," said Stanley T. Piasecki, general manager and superintendent for OhioAmerican.

"The mine was intended to last for at least 10 years. Now, we have been forced by our own country's president and his followers and supporters to permanently close the operation," Piasecki added of the mine that opened in May 2007.

I'm not denying that some new regulations have been enforced, but as your own post said they are based off the formulas from the 77 Act. Simply put, Coal as is, is killing people. It is not impossible to meet regulations, the problem as I've said many times before, is Natural Gas, is cheaper, and cleaner. The fracking craze that's sweeping our nation, is the main enemey killing coal. It's economics 101. As gas gets easier to obtain from underground shale formations, the supply rises, and the cost plunges. This undercuts the cost of fuels such as coal and oil. Like I've said before, I don't like whats happened to Coal, but it was going to happened regardless. Even with out the new regulations, Fracking would have eventually started killing it anyway.

JESUS CHRIST ALLMIGHTY!!..I can't believe what you just posted!!! Those who say you are crazy will have a field day now.
.."Fracking" is 'explosive fracturing' used in gas and oil wells. It's a method of expansion which "fractures" strata and allows petroluem product (crude oil or natural gas) to flow more easily to a drilled hole for capture. The 'craze' you mention is a national outrage over its contamination of ground water and aquafurs in the extraction of OIL and GAS...NOT COAL, you fool..
..Coal miners will wring your neck if you attempt to "fracture" their strata (laminated roof).
..Why would you create such a stupid post? You will say anything to prop up your president?
..Any credibility you may have had is lost.

I'm not saying Fracking is used in Coal moron, can you not read? I'm explaining to you that Fracking which is used in gathering NATURAL GAS has made GAS easier to obtain, and is indeed what is making GAS less expensive. This is fact, regardless of your referring to it as a Outrage. Thus Gas which is cheaper to obtain, and cleaner to use, has made coal's demand go down. Mines could easily meet the regulations, but don't want to eat the profit loss, with gas being so cheap. This has been my argument from the beginning, perhaps pay more attention to what you're reading next time.

BTW Fracking is the "hydraulic" fracturing of shale. Not explosive.

It was explosive, but has since moved to hydraulic means.

Natural gas is what is killing coal. If any person on this website would simply "google" before posting they would see where Alpha actually stated "natural gas" in their statement to the press. Some of these people think the "shell" commercial is about gas for your car because they relate it with the "shell" stations. THAT IS THE TRUTH. THEY DON'T HAVE A CLUE. I also hate what is happening in the coal industry. However, I don't see it getting a lot better at this time.

There was no "misinformation" in this particular post. I've personally set in on meetings with EPA officials. Their goal is to end mining in appalachia and have no problem letting it be known.

This is primarily because Obama's EPA have enacted rules that favor the burning of natural gas. They have gotten exemptions on the amount CO2 they can emit while the coal industry got nothing but tighter limits that cannot be achieved. They haven't got no choice but to switch. Also, remember how Chespeake Energy got caught up in giving the Sierra Club 25 million dollars to wage war on coal. Just imagine how much they have given Obama and the democrats to get these rules enacted to put coal out.

I can't understand anyone disputing the 'war on coal' by obama.

Why would anyone deny it?

Do some supporters think that denying it will save obama some votes?

Would obama supporters actually come on a tiny little forum and LIE for obama when he is assured of losing the vote in coal country?

Do bleeding blue, wtf and others actually BELIEVE the bull crap they are typing?

Multiple times they have vehemently insisted that obama's administration is only ENFORCING EPA mandates from 1977.

obama has used his "bully pulpit" to destroy a way of life that has seen this country through WORLD WARS and has carried an economic boom unparalleled ever before in the entire world.

The industrial might of the USA was fueled 100% by COAL!

If Hitler had been successful in shutting down our coal industry we would be speaking German.

If Japan could have denied us the use of our coal we would be speaking Japanese.

If the United States of America didn't have, and use, coal we would not even BE the United States of America.

If I wanted to destroy the United States of America I would not even consider anything other than to destroy its ability to arm itself and defend itself through the use of COAL! I would do that from within the White House!

How better could I defeat the United States of America than to deny it the use of coal from the inside, as its elected president has done already?

Could a better destruction scenario be imagined than what we are discussing right now?

Without coal we will FALL! We are only here now because of COAL!

Muslims have an abundance of OIL and can, and will, bring us to our knees through the treachery of barack hussein obama and his loyal followers!

If that sounds ridiculous....just read about Hitler, Idi Amin, Noriega, and the list is endless. I am willing to bet that the name Barack hussien Obama will go down in history as having destroyed the mightiest nation in history by influencing the gullible with words and NOTHING else. That's how HITLER did it to 'smart' German people.

What i said is true though. They could meet the regulations, if they were willing to spend the money to do so. But because NATURAL GAS is CHEAPER, EASIER TO GET, AND CLEANER. It's just not worth it to them.
