Does anyone know what are the requirements to become a Pike County Sheriff's Deputy? Or, how you get on with the department? Does the department have a website that lists the requirements? Thanks in advance for the information!

There has got to be more to it than that; that sounds too simple. Don't they have to attend an academy?

I know you'll have free use of a county vehicle. They drive them for personal use all the time. I guess we foot their gas for them too? Might as well...

Uuuummmm volunteer??? No, my papaw was a deputy for years. Not great pay, but he was paid. And I'm positive he didn't buy his cruiser or gas either....

So how did he get on? Do they have a hiring process or an academy?

For him it was a matter of knowing other deputies in the department. He also had to be licensed and bonded.

I understand being bonded because all the cops I know have to be because they carry a gun. I don't understand the license part. What kind of license? By the way, I really appreciate you answering my questions.

I tried to find out best I could about the licensed part being my papaw has been passed away almost 8 years. He could have told me exactly for you. But from what I understand he had to to pass a written test and meet physical requirements. Also have a clean criminal history and so many service hours somewhat like community service. It would also help to know someone in the sheriffs dept. to get your foot in the door....they could tell you some other things I may be leaving out or not explaining well. Good Luck!!!!

Thank you! I'll talk to one of the deputies to get more details. I definitely have a clean record, I have community service hours (sit on several boards), I have a bachelor degree so I like to think the written test wouldn't be too bad, and the physical requirement should be similar to other departs I've talked to.

In order to be a deputy sheriff, all you need to do is hop on one foot to pass the requirements. I mean, just look at Melvin Sawyers!! If he can be a deputy, so can Palmer Pickle!!
