Wow, if you were suddenly without a job how long would it take for you to become homeless. There seems to be quite a few people in this area that are the working poor; living from paycheck to paycheck out of necessity. If they lost their job it might not take long to lose the place that they live too.

Be careful who you call not "decent". You might find yourself without a place to live some day.

Apparently the origanal poster thinks that if they were to become homeless they would get the biggest box...you know the one with running water and a washer and dryer to do there laundry....and they would be all clean and not really have to worry about anything. I guess they don't understand that being HOMELESS means that you no longer have a home to go to, you don't have a shower or a washer and dryer so you can do your laundry and look good and you don't have a kitchen full of food to eat to stay healthy. The people in the homeless sheltors are starving and cold and haven't been able to take a good hot shower in a long time. Maybe the origianal poster should offer help to these people, a warm bed, a hot shower and maybe a nice hot meal for there tummy.....instead of downing them for having some bad luck in there lives or loosing everything they had for one bad choice.

I am very Thankful for the Westcare Homeless Shelter in Pikeville, Those folks know how to treat a person right and with respect. Its not a drug rehab or a motels for a night, its a place when someone who doesn't have a home needs a place to stay. They help those unfortunate get back on teir feet. They do not allow drugs, alcohol or cursing in the building. They provide a place to sleep and food to eat. There are small kids that stay there who have no other place to go, Some of the residents are working jobs and trying to get their life back together, unlike some of you who have no compassion for others in this situation, think someday it may be you and how would you want everyone to feel about you, would you hide your face and be ashamed or hold your head high like these folks are doing , and are doing the best they can. Congradulations to the staff of the Westcare Homeless Shelter in Pikeville for doing a good job.

wqe all need to be very thankful for the westcare homeless shelter in pikeville, Someday you may be homeless due to the economy, losing your home by fire or destroyed by this man made earth. To be judgemental towards this place is very disrepectful, I admire you for the nice comments but to some who post on here, they are only talking because no one else will listen to their crap. The shelter is run by professional folks, yes, you have to do chores and you have to help with groceries if you get food stamps and yes you do have to do community service, that is part of your responsibility for the shelter helping you, give back to those who give to you. They provide food, beds, heat and showers, It's not a motel for teh drug addicts, its a place for those who are truly in need. If you appreciate this place, help them, they are always in need of food or a donation to help them monthly, God will bless you for your efforts, remember someday one of those beds , may be yours to sleep in.

In centuries past, homeless people were sent to the "poor house". This place was also used as a jail for those who didn't or couldn't pay thier debts. Eventually, the debtors weren't sent to "keep" at the "poor house" because, as the law determined, if the debtors were imprisoned then they could not be made to work to pay thier obligations. So the "poor house" came to be occupied by those who where destitute, such as widows, the impoverished elderly, crippled men and others. At one time children were sent with parents but this ceased so families were seperated with children being sent to an orphanage or a home. I am not sure if food and clothing were provided. As a little kid I can remember my grandmother talking about the "poor house" and how the "light bill" (back then the light bill meant the electric bill) was going to send us all to the "poor house". All the best to you.

so thankful for the homeless shelter, when a person dont have a bed to lay down in,u would be glad to be their ,no im not their but someday,we could be u never know,it is taken advantage of but like i have always heard u have to feed the greedy to feed the needy,i know men that are working and making money day by day but yet they are living their and smoke their cig, and drink their energy drink and do what they want with their money, but hopefully they will get tired of taken advantage of things and get their self togeather,it is a great thing everthing is taken advantage of this day and time, but who would want to be their if they didnt have to be,i know a few that do because they go out and do what they want and go lay down in a clean bed at night,we will just pray for them, and for all the little children that r their its not because they want to be,but i do think its a disgrace that big strong healthy lazy men in their 30;s would take advantage of a situation like this.no kids no wife no one but their self,,but like i said i have always heard u have to feed the greedy to help the needy,we will just pray for these sorry men who take advantage of this situation.

I need your help on here to find some information out about getting someone into a substance abuse program. The WestCare is one that is in Pikeville. Also at the Homeless Shelter they have a SAP for out-patients. Not only do they want to get you off the streets, but they also have federal funded programs to help drug addiction a cleaner life.

People should really take the time to get to know "the homeless" before they judge. Our society is to quick to judge you by how much money you make, what kind of home you live in or what you can do for them. I am in close relations with the shelter residents and they have all touch my heart. It is a wonderful feeling to see someone be happy when they are told they have been approved for a home. I once was an addict and Westcare changed me. I am so blessed to be a part of each of the shelter residents lives. It is through the "homeless shelter" that I found my calling in life. God is definitely working in that place. Even though I meet these people on the worst day of their lives I know God has a plan for each and everyone of them and its such a blessing to see things start to come together in their lives. There is so much potential in these people and they would give the shirt off their backs. This is a very well ran establishment by a great staff who care! Keep up the good work WestCare!
