What can be done when a neighbor lets their dog run loose and it comes over on your property and attacks your animals?

I would never shoot a dog unless it was self defense. I have three dogs of my own that I keep in our fenced property and understand how easily an animal can get out. The dog I am talking about is turned loose regularly and has attacked my cat on my porch and is also going into my chicken coup. There is no shelter in the county where I live.

not if the animal in question is destroying your property or a danger to any person. pretty much you have the right to "protect" your property, even use deadly force. but no, you cant just shoot a dog for the sole purpose of shooting it.

I have a Lab one year old still training him..I keep him on a leash at all times... well one day last month I let him off the leash cause my grandson and his friend were up on the hill and I thought..... I am going to let him go play...well he did then he came off the hill and the neighbors dog attacked him in the road.Had to take him to the Vet and it cost fifty dollars to keep him over night and he had bites on him and the end of his tail was bitten off..had to cut it off up to the next notch and sew it up.... this dog is loose all the time they have other dogs they bark all night..This dog comes up in my yard and up on the porch and poop's in my yard and they do NOTHING..... I called him .....(the neighbor)and ask him if he could please do something about his dogs barking all night and please keep his dog in my yard..He stated he could do nothing about it.I haven't sent him the vet bill yet..should I or just let it go as I hate to have problems with my neighbors..But MY dog never goes out of my yard except for that one day and I know he only wanted to play...I told my neighbor I would shoot the dog(IWON"T).... and that I would thump it good the next time it comes up here and I have done that...with some sticks I have ...crazy isn't it..LOL I know.... but what else is there to do..Opinions please.......

Try keeping firecrackers around. Let off one when the dog is on your property. Eventualy it will run as soon as it hears the door opening. It's the humane way to frighten the dog!

That is were you are wrong. My child had a dog and it crossed the ditch onto the neighbors property and he shot it right in front of my child was was calling it to come home. He shot any animal that stepped on his property. He is dead now and I hope that animals torment him forever!

Good idea. The animal will not get hurt and will probably stay off your property.

It really would not do you any good to send him a vet bill as, like it or not, your dog was not confined to a leash either. As far as barking, the city has a noise ordinance. The county does not.

I have a neighbor that lets his dog run lose even though it has snapped at kids in the area. He thinks it is ok cause it is a small dog. He doesnt understand that the teeth are still dangerous. Also another neighbor kets his dogs run around, but they are very well behaved dogs. They have never destroyed anyons property or has shown any type of aggression twords a person. Then one day, the neighbor with the mean little dog got his family member that works for the pound to set live traps in his yard. When the neighbor with the 2 dogs let his out to play he didnt know there were traps and one got in it. The 1st neighbor called the pound and they came and took the dog. I think that is cruel and should be illegal. But yet the pound says it is legal to do. I think the 1st man should have talked to the other neighbor if he didnt want their dog on his property...and he should also keep his contained in his own yard or in his house.
As far as te fire cracker thing...it does work. It will only take a couple weeks and the dog will learn to stay away. Dont hit the dog, its only an animal and cant help it has an ignorant uncarring owner.

I had a black lab one time and he was a wonderful dog. My son and a little child from next door was out in the yard playing with our dog. The dog then decided to go up in the hills to play (i guess) well when he was coming back he had to cross the road and he was waiting for the truck to pass as the children was waiting on our dog the truck went into the other lane just so he could run over my dog. It was awful! The children watched and cried so hard it was the worse thing I had ever seen. That man had to be the cruelest human being on earth! My poor doggie didn't make. I would have understood if my dog was in the way of the man but he was not he was waiting in the other lane for the truck to get by. He was standing so still and the man went into the other lane and just hit him and then floored it. It has broke my heart. I miss my dog so bad.

I feel your pain. I had a siberian husky that had just turned 1. I would put him on a chain for a couple hours each day and kept him inside the rest of the time. He never barked or howled or anything. One day I went outside to bring him in and the chain was broken. I went looking for him and by the time I found him my neighbor shot him. It really was the first time he had gotten out the asshole just shot him. He knew it was mine too. The thing that makes me mad is he has a dog he lets run free but the one time mine gets out he shoots it.
