All of this hype surrounding the hatfields and mccoys is getting really old. What did they ever do other than fight each other. Hollywood should look at doing a movie about a true Appalachian family, the Thackers! If it weren't for the Thackers this area would not be how it is today. There would be no Pikeville or Pike County for that matter. If the research would be done properly then it would show the importance if the Thackers.

"If it weren't for the Thacker's this area would not be how it is today" this place is kinda screwed up in case you have not noticed. I'm not sure most of the Thacker's would want to take credit for this mess.
Damn sure don't want no reality show, have you seen that H&M Moonshine crap?

This was meant to be a respectful and true story about a family who's roots are deeply entrenched into Appalachian culture and history. I understand the black eye the hatfield and McCoy moonshine show is giving our community. To fully understand our people you have examine their beginnings. I don't appreciate all of the negative comments about different sets of Thackers. I am sure we all have different family members who bring down their family's name.

Several family surnames contributed to establishing Pike County, go to the phone book and look at the names that take up the most space. Old English and Scotts Irish tradition of the eldest son inheriting the land and the other siblings striking out on their own in search of land established the county. They come into East Kentucky from old Virginia for land and a place to homestead. The founding families have intermarried with each other from the late 1700's unto this day. Would be difficult to recognize one family as a major contributor to establishing Pike County. They come in in large wagon trains in some cases made up with several of the most prominent family names now common in the county.
The only negative notion I have is still this stigma of the ignorant Hillbilly that hold us all back. Those stupid reality shows and one spring festival in particular only help continue the stereotype of the ignorant Hillbilly. I only hope the Pikeville Hatfield & McCoy Festival does not sink to the level of stupidity the Hillbilly Days Festival has become.

my husband and i created pike county and we created west virginia too
we in fact created marriage, because afterall we dont believe any woman out there should be over age 17 and un married
would you want your daughter to be thought of as un marriable??
omg the harshness of it
we have currently been searching for a husband

and a wife for our children as they are getting old and we do not want anyone to see them without a wedding ring on their fingers!!!
i am afraid if my husband isnt at my side 99.999999 percent of the time that he might stray and then he would have to divorce me for you see its ok to cheat as long as you marry the person you cheated with.
i know so many women out there who are unmarried, they must live unimaginable lives, being able to go out and do what they want and spend their money as they wish and having different good looking men ask them on dates and take them to the beach and it must be a miserable life, unlike my married life where i sit on topix and judge others all day and night and make sure my husband doesnt poop unless i can check it to make sure no other womans food shows up in it.
This has nothing to do with the subject matter and relates or contributes in no way to this discussion.

I have never heard the term Black Thacker, I know there is some Cherokee in the bloodline for one branch of the Thacker's. However I have not heard of Black Thacker's in Pike County. There are of course Black Thacker's. Some of the Thacker's settled in the south so that would be common, but not in Pike County.

My family are directly descended from the black foot Cherokee nation. We are dark in Color and not red. I am proud to be a black Thacker! I don't understand all the comments about red creek. Thacker for life!
