Shawn was just offered this past Monday to have his scholarship reinstated by the President of Pikeville College. There was also email sent to the college of offers to pay for anything that the scholarship did not cover, as we all know there are lots of costs that go with college. However, he did decline the offer.Rick Bentley spoke of this on a Radio Show I think it was Monday night. He said these were facts.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I was told that he is working in the mines now.

Funny that Pikeville College would offer to reinstate his scholarship after being on 20/20. Wonder if they offered the same deal to anyone else? NO! Of course not!

I don't understand why everyone is getting so hyped up over this? I mean, I do feel for those who do not have as much as others. But is everyone just now noticing the way Eastern Ky is? It's been this way for years. It took one 1 hour documentary to get this much attention drawn to us.

No, there has been numerous documentaries about Eastern Kentucky. All you have to do is Google Eastern KY documentaries. Remember when CBS came to Eastern Ky a few years back? There was a lot of hype then as well. The point that a lot of people are trying to make is that the documentaries are always showing Eastern KY in a negative light, instead of also showing the good things.

I'm sorry but I don't remember the one from a few years back. I'll try to find it. Was there any good that came from it though? The things that I've heard from this one so far is about people helping the families shown on the documentary and the pepsi co. providing a new truck for the dentist that was shown. They were also talking about providing computers to kids. I'm glad that they helped atleast one person, but there are many, many more here like them. I too agree that they seem to only show the negative side of Eastern KY, but I believe the reporters may think that it could benefit us with help from others.

When it was fresh in everyone's mind, like this show, a few people that was on the show got some help. But like you, I am worried about all the others that need help as well. And what about when this show becomes old to people? Ya know what I mean?

The families who are poverty stricken need a way out. Even if we as Americans donate a bit of time, clothing, or resources in general to help it is a start. The government will continue to fail because the government is too concerned with themselves to care about any one else. Shawn appeared to be a great kid with a rough road but there are many children in the same situation with less confidence that need real people to help. I am not saying bail them out but help change the way daily life is for them. If this was a city there would be people on top of it trying to change the school system and the living condition, but because these areas are not in our faces every day people turn their backs, and it is not right!

Stop saying someone should do something and work towards doing it yourself! Before any one says "what are you doing", let me tell you what I am doing. I changed my major in college from a nursing career which very easily could have netted me a hefty salary to a double major in social work and psychology so I can relocate closer to Applachia and assist as many as I can to see there is much in life they have the right to experience.

Drugs and alcohol is a coping mechanism that many turn to to deal with the pain and suffering. Overbearing of children is population conservation. Any area of the world that is faced with infant mortality or premature death rates has larger numbers of offspring. It is common sense for any one who understands history and the way people react to crisis. When stability becames fact population rates decline.

These people need help. It isn't about a 20/20 report or President Obama kicking back a Bud to win a vote, it is about people assisting others in making a change. When did we as a nations forget that we all need to help others, even if it is emotional support and nothing more? The reason the US is in the shape it is in is because along the line money became more important than care and concern for those around us.

i had heard that also about him attending union college.I have always been aware of the situation of the situation in Eastern Ky. But myself have had a hard row to hoe.My daddy andI always said if he ever won the lottery(i dont play it) we would head straight p there with a few mac trucks filled with everything you could think of....now thats just a dream because how likely is it he will ever win?My point is i have been racking my brain on what i can ACTUALLY do.I do not want anyone to feel like they are getting hand outs but instead a hand up! I would love to do anything i can to help anyone better their lives.I am currently doing research on what all options i have and what exactly i could do!I didnt take it as though they were putting you guys down but instead bringing to light that before we send our money to other countries for the needy or hardship families we should focus on helping our own! I live in a small town in KY. even tho my isp says lexington i do not live there. However i ook interest in Shawn simply because i have 3 sons and we have been thru hell and back also but mymiddle son had it worse and i wont say why.He overcame that mostly by playing football and he reminded me sooo much of my own son that i wanted to meet him and congratulate him on his effort to overcome! But my heart is with any and all of you anywhere and everywhere and i pray my dream will be full filed soon!Good luck to you guys!does anyone know FROG?last name Barnett?
