When the president orders EPA to regulate coal fired plants out of business the smart money will get out of the coal business now. The handwriting is on the wall and no one will invest in coal now. Yes if you are running coal now and have orders you will run until you fill the orders and try to find new ones. However you will not be investing in any more coal reserves or putting in new mines when the president of the U.S. starts handing out executive orders to shut down coal fired coal plants.
You people are in some kind of fantasy world denial. Will hold on to your last lump of coal and swear the coal business will survive. It will go down to 50% of what we are mining now in the next 6 years. I Imagine it will take several years for the power plants to comply, shut down or switch to nat gas. So yes for about a year you won't notice much change except the mines not hiring and when they lose orders shutting down one by one but it will be over a 5 to 6 year period.
Great news!

What anti coal people will come to realize someday is they have been lied to by people calling themselves "enviromentalist".Bu t when they do wake up it will be too late to save the country.Everyday now,our dollar becomes more worthless because of the overprinting of dollars by the Federal Reserve.Look for the dollar to crash within the next 3 years.A nation is only as good as it's money and the value of the dollar will be gone.We will be at the mercy of countries who will take our coal and burn it and not worry one bit about climate change.

The U.S. produces about a billion tons of coal every year, almost half of it mined in the Powder River Basin, in northeast Wyoming. The Black Thunder Coal mine in Gillette, Wyo., is one of the largest mines in the world. The first thing that hits you is the sheer size of the operation. Dump trucks as big as California bungalows rumble back and forth ó clearing away millions of pounds of clay and dirt to get at the rich coal seam underneath. Itís like peering into an ant colony under siege.
Do you think this could have anything to do with the downward spiral of the coal business in the Appalachian mountains? Did you know that 2012 was a record setting year for coal production? Do you know that 2013 is on pace to shatter that record?
Do you know that a ton of powder river basin coal sells for less than 10.00 a ton, while this regions coal sells for more than 100.00 dollars a ton? Now tell me which you would buy.
He hates coal, all coal, Eastern, Western and in between! Yes they are starting to use that coal in the southern coal power plants and the EPA started crying about the coal dust from the coal train cars. They are talking about making them put tarps on them!
Follow the money! you will see Natural Gas Commercials for every clean coal commercial. Nat Gas burns 50's cleaner than coal and they are poised to take over coal for the energy source for power generation. 50% cleaner and no fly ash or particulate matter, no heavy metals to speak of. Natural Gas will meet the new clean air standard until the renewables come on line.
Western Coal will take the same hit as Eastern Coal, may get to burn it a little longer for the plants that already have the scrubbers but not much longer. Natural Gas my boy, watch all the politicians running for the natural gas lobby and money, it's the new flavor of the day! Coal is out, Eastern, Western, northern and southern...unless we can sell it to China and India and as I said the bit O will not allow that, coal was killed on June 24 of this month.

TVA, Duke energy, look at their long range plans, they are on the internet, coal is not in their future 10 years out and they will buy less every year over the next 10.

I disagree with your take that he hates coal.I believe he loves it,he just wants to own it all as well as the oil and natural gas.Believe me,coal mining will not end in KY or anywhere else. The great economic upheaval is coming and somebody or some people are coming for the coal and everything else.Of course the laborers won't be paid much.

Many products that is used in the home have a coal by product in them. From paint on the walls to medicines people use and even in the automobiles they drive. Many, many things people use have something to with coal even their computer. When coal is not allowed to be used in anything in this country then many things will be unavailable or far too expensive.Along with the declining dollar most things will become unaffordable.

Yea we all eat coal and fart coal dust, everybody for one hundred years down here has been dependent on the parasitic coal corporations. They been destroying the mountains and sucking the place dry for generations, from the first one that come in here years ago. Only good thing about this is people will be able to find out their is life after coal, not the end of the world overnight but the smart people will be looking for a different life for their kids. Don't put all your eggs in the coal bucket!

When the world looks at east KY all they see is coal and timber. They see no other use for it.It really isn't anything but gullies. From it's formation as a plateau to present day it has continually eroded,it's not really usable for anything except for what is there and mainly that would be coal. The coal industry has never produced enough jobs for the population and it never will. There will be a huge exodus from east KY in time. But the problem is there will be no jobs anywhere else in this country. But the coal mining will go on.

How about instead of b!tching on Topix, all of contact Kentucky's U.S. Senators, Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell, and ask them to do the job they're paid to do and fight for the coal miners. The miners' taxes go to pay these two men's salaries, so lobby them and tell them to get off their @sses and get the president to stop 'killing the industry' if you truly feel he is at fault. It is their job. Venting on a this site ain't going to get you folks anywhere. Get smart.
What has Mitch and the manchild Rand done for you lately? Nothing, you say. Thai is because that is what they do...nothing. Name any one thing they have accomplished in the past 5 years. Oh yeah, filibusters. Sorry, but they have no interest in you until it comes to voting time. Then they lie to you, knowing you fall for it every time; then return to their true constituents; ALEC, CrossRoads America and other SuperPacs, and their corporate handlers. Congress, especially Republicans are re-elected to do nothing but obstruct (or vote on abortion or health insurance bills that have been long decided, thereby beating a dead horse); that has become their only job, not listening to you.

They can't stop Obama. But Obama also doesn't need the Democrats anymore either and some of them realize that.He will go around Congress and do as he pleases.Coal mining, oil drilling, gun control, etc. whatever. If Congress doesn't comply...just issue an excuetive order.America is going to pay for it's sins like abortion. This country has allowed over 50 million of it's potential citizens to be aborted or murdered.God has allowed Obama to rule and he will. There will soon be 50 new million(mostly Catholic) citizens who will also have a huge impact on what this country becomes.America....the newest banana republic.

yes for western coal shipped from Wyoming to southern states, there is some loss due to dust but this is just another shot in the leg to cripple coal.

Obama stopped banks from financing foreign coal fired power plants, he will stop U.S. from exporting if he can.

I disagree. He won't stop exporting coal as long as it is has foreign interest.Such as a Chinese company that has stock in an American energy company. He will also sell natural gas and oil to China while regulating it here. This is the new America.

An excerpt from the link:

There Really Is No One Person To Blame

Even with Obama, the EPA and other lawmakers openly targeting the coal industry, it all comes down to the fact that natural gas is becoming the new industry to produce our electricity. Yes, there will still be a need for coal, most likely in other countries, but that to will play out as those countries search out different and more efficient sources than coal.

Robert Ukeiley, an environmental lawyer in Berea, Ky., said it's ridiculous to blame environmental regulations for the coal industry's struggles. He said those rules are completely reasonable, have been decades in the making and are a moral no-brainer.

He said it is just a simple fact that "cheap coal in central Appalachia has been mined out. There is no politician who can change that or scapegoat anybody." Remaining coal supplies tend to be more expensive to extract and aren't as profitable, he said. "Central Appalachia would be experiencing almost as much decline in coal mining even if we had the most anti-environmental president of our history in place," Ukeiley said.

In ClosingÖ.

As hard as it is to accept, coal mining as a leading industry in this region is coming to an end. We might as well face it now and work on a solution to possibly provide miners the opportunity to cross-train in the natural gas industry for the near future. This author has many relatives (past and present) that either work directly or indirectly in the coal industry.

I canít honestly imagine what these men and women are enduring that depend on coal for their way of life. A way of life that has been handed down from generation to generation. West Virginiaís leading coal producing county (Boone County) has seen its unemployment rate go from 4% to 12% and that directly reflects the lay offs and closures in the coal industry.

Donít think for a second that our top leaders in the statehouse and in Washington donít know whats coming for the coal industry. They know it and are doing their best not to have to own up to that fact, at least not until after the upcoming November election.

End Of Story

Jack Swint
