Offiicials release more details about planned Pikeville shopping center

PIKEVILLE, Ky.(WYMT)- Officials in Pikeville say contracts have been finalized for a new shopping center that will have dozens of stores and offer hundreds of new jobs.

It is being called Pikeville Commons and could be here by the end of next year.

It is a huge project that has been years in the making.

"This is not only about doing a great development plan. This is also about attracting the national brands and becoming the destination center for shopping," said Pikeville City Manager Donovan Blackburn.

It will include 24 new stores, many of which have already been signed to major national retailers.

"55,000 square foot craft store, a 24,000 square foot retailer. You have a 20,000 square foot apparel store. You have a 10,000 square foot shoe store," said Blackburn.

While they cannot disclose those store names yet, they say the development website discloses what kinds of stores they will be and which stores the developers work closely with.

"You're going to see a lot of those national brands that you'll recognize, so that will kind of tell you some of the story," said Blackburn.

They recently added a new feature to the development.

"There is also one major demand that we haven't been able to fulfill. We've done a little but dabbling here and there and that's housing, affordable housing," said Blackburn.

The developer has drawn up plans to put at least 58 apartments above the stores.

And of course there will be new jobs, hundreds of them.

"It will also mean 600 new jobs at a time when we need jobs," said Pikeville City Commissioner Barry Chaney.

Officials say the benefits are plentiful.

"The more people you have coming into your area, the more they see what you have to offer, see the value of the local economy, and keep coming back," said Chaney.

They expect to break ground on the project by April and hope to have it completed by next year's holiday shopping season.

Anyone know how to figure out what the "development website" is? All I could find was the following that showed several apparel stores, a craft store, pet supply store, a shoe store, a pharmacy, but no specific names.

This sorta goes against what we have been hearing lately about coal. Alot of people have been saying that if the mines shut down pikeville will dry up and blow away. If this is true who in their right mind would invest in a town that may be doomed?

Coal will be fine. It's just the operators trying to manipulate the miners into voting for Mitt Romney so they can avoid safety regulations and blow the miners to Kingdom Come. Have to make the operators happy, dead or alive miners. Congratulations on the new shopping center.

If we had just a few ppl running this City n County government we might be able to get good stores, if were not getting anything we don't already have whats the point. The only good i see coming fr this is ppl will be able to get jobs which is badly needed in Pike Co. Pike Co., and City officials are a joke. We need some officials that can get something done. They acted like we were getting good stores well I'd like to know what store there talking abt that's why they wouldn't tell any store names.

I agree. We have multiple stores and restaurants of the same thing.
We leave the freaking state to go shopping and eat. It's a shame we have to away from home and spend our money.
This county needs a Target, Kohl's, T.J.Maxx,Old Navy,etc. We have K-Mart and Wal-Mart. What a freaking joke.
In Kingsport last week a lady at Kohl's asked where I was from. When I told her she said there were so many people from this area that comes there. I said yeah, there is nothing where I am from.

A Kroger would be nice..95% of WalMart's food is made in China, along with everything else. Wouldn't it be nice to have Red Lobster,Olive Garden, Golden Corral or some other nice restaurants inthis area?

Yes, but the cooks ruin the restaurants because they can't cook so it certainly would not be beneficial to bring any more restaurants into the area. Krogers would be great, though.
