Do you think Daniel Harmon is the best to ever play baseball at Pikeville ? I don't remember anyone in 23 years to compete with Daniel, he has it all and hope he gets drafted too.

Yes, Daniel Harmon is very good. I can't take anything away from this young athlete but, he has a great deal to prove before he can be considered the best ever from PHS. First, Chad Childers (1999) still holds the batting average, doubles, triples, and games started records. True, he did not materialize at the next level. The pitching records are still held by Josh Shofner (career ERA) and Chad Roberts (season wins). Other notable position players with careers just as good or better than Harmon's are: J.P. Blair, Josh Barone, Josh Shofner (as a position player), please feel free to add others. These are just a few from my era.

What about Tink Coleman's son who pitched U.K. to a College World Series and went on to pitch pro ball? Chase Huffman is still pitching at Morehead.

Daniel is a nice player as well as all of those mentioned. However, your Pikeville baseball history seems to end in the '90s or in the case of Matt Coleman-mid '80s

There have been MANY great baseballers at Pikeville High.

Terry Wright, great left handed pitcher.
Andrew Joyce, catcher, one of the strongest arms to ever come out of PHS who played college ball in NC.

there have been several and to answer the question...No, Daniel is not the best ever, just one of many in a long line.

What do you all think about the players who had
undeniable talent: Nick Roberts, Hunter Smith, Wade McCown, Josh Adams, just to name a few?

There were many great player at PHS. I have to say that Chad Childers was 1 of the best players to leave there. As far as his college career he had an arm injury and was unable to continue playing ball, if not for that I think he would have done really well. He was asked to go to a devil ray's try out/camp. Chad and his dad was always at the park in the off season practicing batting. I guess that is why he still holds all those records. Kids now days just don't have the work ethic that older generations had!!

There have been a lot of good players go thru Pikeville...Josh Shofner played at UK, Chad Roberts was all-state, Chad Childers was really good, Chase Huffman is playing at Morehead, Jamie Anderson and Nick Roberts were both really good, and Justin Anderson also has the record for career hits. That is just in the last 10 yrs. I'm sure there were a lot of other great players before that!

The fact is that Pikeville baseball coaches have probably ran off several players who could have been the best players in the region, not just Pikeville. The list of players who was not permitted to play on that team never got to because their parents weren't doctors, lawyers, cpa's, dentists or teachers at the school. Or maybe they didn't "look" like what the coach thought "looked" like a Pikeville player (too skinny, too tall, too chubby, looked funny when they ran...) I know that one year (10 years or so ago), several of the best players got cut while Pikeville coaches tried to "empower" one particular 7th & 8th grade age group of players with a certain (suckup) parent group. At the expense of another age group of young players. It was the worst baseball win/loss record Pikeville ever had.
At least the footall team keeps everyone who can play. kudos to the football coaches

JP Blair was a man among boys. By far the best of his age group for years before and after. He looked, threw and batted like a pro ball player when he was a Senior. Then he went astray. Too bad Jimmy let him get away.

Chris Lawson was also another good baseball player at PHS and went on to have a good career at Pikeville College..not to mention he coached Pikeville to 4 15th Region Titles in his 8 years as head coach.

I remember all the Pikeville players in the early 90s. Most had their heads and noses so far up their rears that couldn't have played post hs at any other place even if they wanted too. There is a lot more to a player than talent. Personality, humility, and class go a long way. None of which I remember the coaches, players, or fans having!!! As for Mr. Blair, he had too many other things on his mind, baseball was not one of them. What a joke!
