Pike County Church Refuses Interracial Couples Membership
(Gulnare, Kentucky)- One eastern Kentucky community is divided after a Pike County church voted Sunday not to allow interracial couples to be members or participate in church services. According to members of the Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church, not everyone is in agreement with yesterday's vote. Melvin Thompson, who actually submitted the proposal to the church, defended his position, and says he doesn't feel this will affect the Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church at all. "I do not believe in interracial marraiges, and I do not believe this will give our church a black eye at all. It came before the church on Sunday and the vote was 9 in favor and 6 against," said Thompson. One member of the community whose family attends Gulnare Freewill Baptist, L.J. Harville, says she finds Sunday's vote hard to believe. "I just can't believe that a church, where people go for solace in times of need, can show such a display of racism," explained Harville. East Kentucky Broadcasting obtained a copy of Mr. Thompson's proposal which passed on Sunday.
The following is that proposal : "That the Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church does not condone interracial marriage. Parties of such marriages will not be received as members, nor will they they be used in worship services and other church functions, with the exception being funerals. All are welcome to our public worship services. This recommendation is not intended to judge the salvation of anyone, but is intended to promote greater unity among the church body and the community we serve." Submitted to the church business committee November 9, 2011 for their consideration by Melvin Thompson, member, Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church.

Did I miss something? How does banning interracial marriages "promote unity among the church body and the community we serve"? What is their scriptural reference for this decision or was the decision based on personal feelings about interracail marriage?

Moses married an Ethiopian named Zipporah who was also identified or referred to as a midianite because these two races are one in the same they were both black. Numbers Ch.12 Verse1 Zipporah was also referred to as Moses' a Kushite or Cush...ite.We were made in his image. We have no idea what GOD looks like.He may be Blond with an afro, green eyes and dark( black) skin. We /You better be careful of how you treat others for you will be judged by GOD. By allowing the devil to raise his head on this unnecessary subject. This church has hurt a lot of other ppl. Non-believers find it hard enough to come to church because they feel that they are being judged and then this. WOW! We are suppose to be a light to this world and show the love of CHRIST. I think it is time to change your bulbs they are burnt out.See More

Everybody needs to get together and support this churches decision. Giving in to animalistic desires is one thing, also something to be ashamed of, but going so far as to get married is just pathetic. This is a perfect example of the Church taking the correct road against indecent and immoral people, those with no values and just in it for their own filthy desires. This is basically like bestiality just not as extreme. I don't care what these nasty people do in the privacy of their own home or barn, but for goodness sakes, keep it private where decent people don't have to witness such. You can pretend to be politically correct all you want, but watch how they are looked upon when out in public together. The youth of this country just keep trying to see how low they can go, either drugs, prostituting for drugs, and now this is the in thing. Anything to embarrass and bring shame on their parents, rebelling at it's finest. Sad but the parents have to accept a lot of the responsibility for not instilling any decency on their child, just let it run wild just like an animal. What was that old saying about reaping what you have sewn?

How sick are you? Stand back and cast your judgment on people that you know nothing about. You my dear are pathetic and clueless. And I hope that you have never reproduced because I would hate to see your product. No one is bring shame on anyone, these are two highly educated individuals, and have wonderful parents. How can you question anyone's decency. You're a flippin nut. Yes, their parents are reaping what they sowed, two wonderful adult children that have love and compassion in their hearts. And it seems to me that maybe your parents might have stumbled along the way. It's obvious to me that someone should have practiced some birth control.

When you are out in public, I bet people look at you funny. Because you're SPECIAL, you're the Miss Thang, I can tell..LOL I'm sorry if I'm not being politically correct here, but what the hell is bestiality?

These people are stupid..there are a ton of white women seeing black men in Pike Co, some older some younger and some even in the upscale areas. If they continue this the won't have any church members lol.

I agree with whoever said this is gonna end up on national news and make us all look like racists. I am just waiting for it to happen now. I, for one, am sick and tired of people trying to use God as an excuse to cover up their own bigotry. I am ashamed to admit I know people that think that "mixing the races" is a sin. I'm sorry, but I just don't think God sees the color of your skin. As long as you have a good heart, does it matter what race you are? The answer is obviously no, but try telling some people that!

I agree completely with you. I wonder if this is real? But there are people, even in groups like a church, that believe in this kind of stupid redneck racism. If it's true I hope it does make national news. This kind of ignorance needs to come to an end.
