NEW LOW' Jessica Hill/AP

Senators to NRA: Stop Newtown Robocalls

Unthinkable? Despicable? These are the sentiments two Connecticut senators have conveyed to the National Rifle Association for making robocalls to residents in Newtown and urging them to oppose gun control proposals. In a letter to the NRA, Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy have demanded that the organization “immediately stop calling the families and friends of the victims” of the Sandy Hook massacre—a “new low” for the organization to stoop to just three months after the shooting. Newtown residents reportedly began receiving automated calls from the NRA last week, while others claim they’ve received postcards in the mail.

Obama Urges Assault-Weapon Ban Vote
An assault-weapons ban may not have made it into the gun control proposal Sen. Harry Reid will bring to the floor, but the Obama administration is now pressuring the Senate to vote publicly on a proposal to eliminate the weapons as an amendment “It will be a question for all 100 members of the Senate to ask themselves about whether or not they think that voting for and supporting an assault weapons ban would actually do something to reduce gun violence in communities all across the country," Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Monday at the White House briefing. "We’re going to have that debate,” Earnest said, clarifying that the president does not in fact support a National Registry of gun owners—something Karl Rove accused him of over the weekend on ABC’s This Week.

Paul, Cruz threaten filibuster on gun laws
As Democrats gear up for a series of looming Senate battles on gun control legislation, conservative Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky., Ted Cruz, R-Tex., and Mike Lee, R-Utah - two of whom are fast shaping up to be the younger senatorial set's most reliable rabble-rousers - are threatening to filibuster any law that would make federal gun laws more stringent.

NEW LOW indeed, Nobody coming to take your guns, just strengthen the law and look how they filibuster planning on holding up progress like the 13hour drone fiasco. What a bunch of showboats. Not about protecting children by ensuring nutjobs don't easily get guns. Law abiding gun owners shouldn't have to worry. But spin those tales like Rove and fauxbox pundit repukes. Dumbasses

Rubio splits with Paul on foreign policy

Marco Rubio on isolationism:'We have paid for it dearly'

LOUISVILLE, Ky.— Florida Sen. Marco Rubio swung by Rand Paul’s home state here on Monday where he effectively made one thing clear: He’s no Rand Paul — particularly on foreign policy.
In a soaring speech on the University of Louisville campus, Rubio made the case for American military might around the world, vowing that the U.S cannot “retreat” from international conflicts, must encourage democracy and continue spending money overseas aimed at bolstering the country’s image. He didn’t mention Paul by name, other than when he corrected a questioner who thought a speech he delivered recently called for the elimination of the Department of Education.
“I actually think that was your other senator’s speech,” Rubio said as he flashed a grin, with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell sitting stoically behind him.

But Rubio’s remarks come just as Paul has been trying to clamp down on federal dollars spent on foreign aid and as the Kentucky freshman has been pushing for a “less aggressive” American role in the world — as the two prospective 2016 rivals continue to lay out competing visions of the GOP’s future.

“We can’t solve every humanitarian crisis on the planet, we can’t be involved in every dispute, every civil war and every conflict,” Rubio told a concert hall filled with young adults and middle-aged Kentucky voters.“But we also cannot retreat from the world. It’s not that America will continue to function as the world’s police officer. The problem is that like anything in the world: If you pull back from it, a vacuum will be created.”

Rubio added:“The alternative to U.S.[engagement] on the global stage is chaos.”

And as Paul — a fellow tea party favorite who, like Rubio, was elected in 2010 — has called for dramatic reductions in foreign aid at a time of huge deficits, Rubio pointed to post-World War II reconstruction efforts in Europe and U.S. taxpayer dollars spent to help eradicate AIDS in Africa as positive examples that bolster the U.S. image around the world

Rand Paul's Loopy Ascent

When you’ve got loons the likes of Ted Cruz and Sarah Palin fluttering about, I suppose it’s easy not to seem like such a wacko bird yourself.

Is that why Rand Paul is flying high right now? Or is it because he followed his 13-hour filibuster — that knee-defeating, bladder-defying moment in the Senate sun — by showing a few of his less florid feathers? Either way, he has managed, with remarkable speed, to migrate to the foreground of Republican politics. You could almost lose sight of what an albatross he really is.

Today he’s singing the moderate song of immigration reform, and that dirge about drones, which had a valid bass note despite its alarmist melody, struck chords across the political spectrum.

But Paul’s greatest hits include a denunciation of Medicare as socialism, a recommendation of stopping foreign aid to a few key allies, and the insistent introduction of Patriot Act amendments so loopy that one of them netted all of 10 votes from the 95 senators present while another garnered a whopping total of 4.

As Jennifer Steinhauer noted in The Times right after he peddled those clunkers, he had seemingly relocated to Washington “less to make laws than points.”

Now he’s making headlines and waves, and not as a Tea Party curiosity but as a Republican Party lodestar, someone discussed seriously as a possible force in the 2016 presidential primaries. He was tapped just last week to be the featured speaker at the approaching Lincoln Day Dinner in Iowa. There’s an important caucus in that state, you’ll recall.

Paul personifies the G.O.P.’s curse right now. Although it needs to re-establish its bearings in the mainstream, many of the Republicans making the biggest splashes are rowing in from strange tributaries, and the establishment can’t seem to stop the tide.

Seasoned hands with cooler heads tend not to generate nearly as much excitement. All Jeb Bush generated with the publicity tour for his immigration book was outright befuddlement.

The tail wags the dog. Rather than Cruz, the junior senator from Texas, humbly taking cues from John Cornyn, the senior senator, Cornyn labors to match the supercilious upstart scowl for scowl, and even followed Cruz’s intemperate lead to cast one of only three Senate votes against John Kerry’s confirmation as secretary of state.

And Mitch McConnell, who is not only Kentucky’s senior senator but also the Senate minority leader, seems to worry more about Paul, the state’s junior senator, than vice versa.
