Ethel dear you have to see this Snake Man of Appalachia, he is from letcher County and the show is filmed in Letcher County right by the Pike County/Letcher County line. Please check this out and let us know what you think Ethel.

These are real people and just because they may not live the way I think is better does not make them wrong. They seem to be decent caring people and there are a lot of people who could learn from that. The snake thing.....well why anyone would want to do that is beyond me and believe you me I would kill every snake I saw but for some strange reason those men want to save them. And although I think that is crazy I uphold their right to do it if that is what they beieve. I just would not want them for neighbors. Animal Planet is just showing how some real" people live. I'm not ashamed of that. If you are, then move away and lie about where you are from. If you are proud of where you are from then take the good with the bad. There is no "all good" place anywhere.

i think if the man used his head for something he might stop some of that mt top mining
see, the way i see it, the epa has put holds on some of it by using animals, streams, etc as a way to block it, endangerment
but, the snakeman could take it to a whole new level
RELIGIOUS beliefs.....
see the snake handlers, believe that taking up serpents is a way to show god that you have total faith in him to protect you
if the snakes are a religious symbol to them and the snakes live in those mts
then maybe the snakeman could put a block on some of that mt top removal by using the snake as a religous symbol
i am totally against mt top mining as it is taking away underground mining jobs
the small, undeground mines of days gone by are gone, they have been bought out by conglomerates, giants of industy
who have no personal relationship to the ppl or the area
they come in, strip the coal out and leave
and the underground mines are shutting down, or laying off due to not being able to meet production demands because mtr is coming in and doing it so fast
and all the ppl who work mtr, see where your jobs are in five or ten years
go snakeman
the only problem i have with it is, they try to make out like hes broke, ok, he has how many 4 wheelers, harleys, computers, internet
etc, his wife had highlights in her hair
and that whole deal with packing water to a wringer washer, is just for show

I've seen the show. I think it's funny how they put subtitles on the screen because "outsiders" can't understand us half the time. I see nothing wrong with the shows portrayal of us because it's honest, isn't it? We do not use proper language when we speak, we speak with a thick accent, and most of the people here are poor. I don't agree with snake-handling to "prove" your faith in God. God knows our heart and knows whether or not we have faith in Him; we don't have to take up snakes to prove it. Remember what Jesus said about "mustard seed faith"? Fact is, not a one of us has the amount of faith in Him that we ought to have. God said, "Do not tempt the Lord thy God" and that's what I think snake-handling is--tempting Him. But if that's what floats their boat--more power to 'em. It's not my place to judge.

Hurt back my ass. He picked up 150 pound rocks, climbed up and down the mountains and did fairly heavy carpenter work. I hope he's not drawing disabled soc. Sec. Cause he may lose it. First half hour he could not wait to get back to the mines then in second half he cried and told his daughter he did not want to go back. The whole show was bullshit.

This show demands one more comment from me. It showcases how some people won't work unless it's what they want to do. That man acted like the mines is the only job around here. True mining pays better but refusing other work while spending money fooling with snakes and fooling with them after being fined10thousand dollars shows you what kind of sorry provider he is. He simply puts his wants ahead of his family.

i do agree about that, he could get a job on road construction, etc, you know the little bit of work he did for his friend, was what maybe 10 boards he nailed up?
maybe 2 hours if that
its bullshit
how did he earn the money to keep his harley his truck, his four wheelers, etc
i doubt hes on disability, he might have been on workers comp
but more than likely hes maxed it out and his wife talking about taking the kids to the dentist, u know her and them 4 kids are all on welfare and a medical card
as far as that goes, a man who really wants to work can find a job, if its at walmart, or lowes or whatever

I actually know who these people are and have mutual
friends with them. I actually saw someone on the show
that I know too. I think it's amusing that most people live in squalor around these parts but still have cell phones, computers, satellite, and such. I am not saying anything directed toward this family mind you, just pointing out an obvious fact we all view around these parts.

I know them and they are about as full of shit as a christmas duck. The only real part I have seen so far is the wringer washer that they pack water to. There is no city water available where they live, and their well dried up and was full of orange sulfur water even when it worked. They actually DO have to use rain water for their clothes. But the "job" he had on that tower was a crock. That was his brothers CB tower, not 50 feet from where he lives, and all he did was climb it and wrap a little duct tape around a couple poles. Oh, and the "birthday party" was bullshit too. It wasn't even those kids birthdays. Their REAL birthday party was months later and they had a big party at McDonalds. And ask anybody around him how "christian" he is when he's drinking and doping and cursing and trying to kill his younger sister and anybody else that gets in his way. He's about as christian as the man in the moon. I noticed that when they showed his snakes, they didnt show his scorpions and poisonous spiders. Yeah, he's gone to snake handling churches, but he keeps those animals because he thinks they are cool, not for religious reasons. And how he gets his money is from dope dealing, just like the rest of his family.

Snake handlers support their faith from 2 vs found in Luke, but the funny thing is most scholars believe that these vs do not belong in the Cannon because these vs are not found in the oldest known copies of scripture.

I too have felt that this practice of snake handling is just another example of a Biblical Scripture being taken out of context and improperly lost in translation so to speak. If I am not mistaken, the verses pertaining to this are actually making an analogy. It's the intent to give an example about the power of Faith itself by saying that IF a person's Faith is strong enough that they can handle serpents, drink poisons, etc. but it in no way directs them to actually do so.

Yeah, Jesus was tell the apostles to go forth "The Great Commission" to be brief, and that nothing would harm them. But again, your right it was an analogy as that it dosent matter what happens to you on earth because in fact all 10 of the 12 died for their faith . The two that did not, John died in exile not martyred & well we all know about Jedus

It's ok, the Turttle man lost his teeth from a chainsaw accident, not from meth or lack of oral hygiene.

I have watched Snakeman, but I also was talking about him lifting them big rocks and climbing the mountains. Hiys back can't be that bad! I have a really bad back and theres NO way I could do either. The first nite it was on I just caught it because I was watching Turtleman re-runs, as usual, I guess that's why they put Verlin on afterwards. They figured everyone in KY was already watching Ernie. But I looked up where Snakeman was from and it said Whitesburg. It's ok to watch, even though I don't agree with any of it, but my absolute favorite show is Turtleman! I love him and his LIVE ACTION YEYEYEYYE!!!!

i agree, if he is able to climb up and down the hills, which i suspect is really just a public park
then he can work
i do beleive about the cb tower, my grandpa used to have one just like that back n his cb days
i cant understand where they are going with this show
what is the purpose
is the whole idea to show a man out of work trying to support his family
or to show religious snake handling
i cant find the meaning they are going for
i bet alot more ppl would be willing to come out and tell what they know about this
