Now traveling for work I see all around the country temples and synagogues and signs of jewish culture and communities around the US, but it's strangely absent in and around Pikeville. A coworker brought me into his community here and I found it to be really pleasant and open.
Has there ever been a significant jewish community and temples in and around town?

I don't think you will find a Jewish Community in this area. I would think that if one exists that they meet at their homes for service and entertainment. If your a lawyer its my understanding that it's a good place to open a office.

There used to be one in Williamson. The Synagogues there shut down a few years ago though.

I'm not too sure that there ever really was a very large Jewish community. There are still a few around in Williamson but the synagogue shut down like 2 years ago or so because there just wasn't enough people attending regularly.

I've never met any Jewish people around here. I know some Jewish people up north though. They are all very nice, hard-working people. The closest synagogue that I know about near here is in Huntington, West Virginia. It's called B'nai Sholom, if I recall correctly.
