Demand for coal has been decreasing. Even out west (western America) where's mining is still going it's not due to American demand. It's being shipped and sold overseas. In 2012 an estimated 124 million tons were shipped out of country. The coal companies on our side of America are only facing a natural decline.

I worked underground for most of my life, but I got to say, I will be glad when coal is gone and this region can move on from it. People around here are clinging way to hard to it, it is time to find a different industry to drive us. Maybe since hemp is now legal to grow for industrial reasons we can get on board with that. It frustrates me to see folks who aren't willing to move on and join this century.

It is not a natural decline. It is in decline because obama has closed coal fired plants. Because he has closed them you can expect your electric bill to be at least 5 times in a few years what it is now. Thank you obama for your lack of common sense.

Can you say b--u--l--l?

The decline and fall of coal has been working it's way across eastern and southeastern Kentucky. Laurel County once had mines everywhere. Now none that I know of. The same for other areas. Mining died in a lot of counties decades ago. It was dying back before you or anyone else ever heard of Obama.

Keep believing the local politicians who are in the pocket of the mining companies and Kentucky will never change from being one of the poorest states in America. Sixteen Kentucky counties are on the list of the 100 poorest counties in the nation. That's sixteen percent of the list. Why? Because of refusing to let go of the old ways and looking at the new, and from believing the very same local and state politicians which keep us this way.

You don't know what you are talking about. Yes, some areas seem to have been mined out of their supply of coal. With any industry there is supply and demand. This would effect supply but not demand. Obama has closed coal fired plants which is killing the industry. Name one other president that has attacked a single industry like he has.

You really don't understand a whole lot do you? The main problem that keeping SE KY poor is geographical. Because of the mountains we don't have the access out of the area to bring in new industries. Look at Louisville, they have multiple interstates and a river. We just don't have the ability to have that here. Please stop drinking the kool-aid.
