Graduates at the University of Pikeville who greeted Gov. Paul Patton at commenecement will be one of the last ones to cross the stage with him there as the school's president.

The Board of Trustees voted that current Vice President James Hurley will take over for Patton in July of 2013. Board of Trustees Chairman Terry Dotson said when Patton was given the job, they knew what length of time he would be there.

The board met in February and May to discuss plans for the future leadership of the college. Dotson said this is not the end for the governor.

"The governor will stay on in the position of chancellor, the face of the college that way to the institutions and he can aid in fund raising and government relations and those kinds of things," said Dotson.

Hurley will be the first graduate of the school to become president. Dotson said Patton will still live on campus with his wife Judy and plans on staying involved.

And the least qualified university president in the country. More nepotism at UPike. Only in Pikeville can someone who has never served as faculty, department chair, or has yet to earn a terminal degree can be president. This is a slight to every faculty member at the university. Don't let the awkward votes of confidence fool you, the faculty will be unlikely to support him.

He got a lot accomplished for his short stay as president, it will be hard to see anyone doing any better.

UPIKE is a vital part of this community. Many of us are excited to see it continue to grow and thrive.

Then you should demand that they do a national search for a new president like all reputable universities do rather than hiring an unqualified "special assistant" like they are about to do. Most universities recognize the need for new ideas from the outside, apparently UPike would rather keep its good 'ol boy network in place.

Do you know if they did a national search?

At this point it is probably best to stop the negativity and give the man a chance. You may be proven correct. On the other hand, you may be wrong in your assessment of his ability.

It isn't an issue of "his ability" but rather an issue of his having had the higher education leadership experience to serve at the helm of a college or university. I can't believe that a national search was done for Patton's successor, as Hurley wouldn't have even made the first cut.

He may be a genuinely nice guy and a capable administrator, but I simply don't regard him as having the experience for the job to which he is being appointed.

If the comment is true than it explains a lot. Dotson suggested Hurley be the next president???? Dumb and Dumber live at UPike!

No, they did not do a national search. In fact, thy had a meeting with the faculty last week to tell us flat out they were not doing one. If UPike would have joined the public system, state oversight would have required a national search and a candidate with qualifications.

Moot point as they are not part of the state system. As far as Mr. Hurley's credentials, I understand that he is to have his Doctorat within in the next few weeks.

Also the role of a college president has gone from being educator to being administrator and fund raiser. With that being said; I am sure that the new president will fulfill the obligations that have been placed upon him.
