Another more common definition for holler in Appalachia,"that includes east ky and WVa, the Ozark mountains as well" is the depression or valley between two mountains. Original or more correct pronounciation Hollow was lost due to us being landlocked and isolated for generations. The Scotts Irish, English and German peoples that settled here kind of established their own way of talking and it is just part of our natural speech pattern.
Mountain folk like Patty Loveless make a living at it for I doubt if she could sell a record if she talked like a flatlander and did not have that mouuntain twang to her voice. You could not beat it out of Loretta Lynn and others, ingrained and their to stay.

You make fun of the way we talk, we make fun of you poor smucks trying to live on concrete with all your urban problems.
