Mitch is the minority leader in the US Senate. Whether he is against coal or the biggest supporter of coal in the world doesn't matter. He doesn't get to set the agenda for the Senate or decide how legislation will go forward. Harry Reid and Barry Sortero are the people you need to blame if you're unhappy with what is going on in the government.

No. He just got $2.9 billion to finish Olmsted Lock and Dam on the Ohio River, or at least that is what the Tea Party is accusing of getting as the price of "selling out" on the deal to keep the country from defaulting on its debt.

But I don't suppose you can see over the hills far enough to realize that Olmsted Lock and Dam is vital to your coal mining. You people give McConnell hell for not doing anything for coal and then when he does something vital for the transport of coal on the river, you give him hell for doing it!

The Olmsted Lock and Dam is vital to your coal mining! It replaces two Ohio River locks, No. 52 and 53, that are nearly 100 years old! Those old locks were built for steamboats the size they were 100 years ago, not for today's 1,000 plus foot long barge tows. Every time a barge tow loaded with coal or anything else gets to 52 it has to be broken up, the barges put through single file, and then reassembled. Then when it gets to 53 it has to be broken up again, put through, and then reassembled again. That makes your coal cost that much more, and makes it that much less competitive with western coal.

Like the river boat man said, you can't "see over the hills far enough to realize that Olmsted Lock and Dam is vital to your coal mining."

The coal industry is more than just mines in eastern Kentucky. It does not matter where the Olmsted Lock and Dam is physically located, your coal will pass through it on its way to market, just like it passes through those two 100 year old locks in western Kentucky now.

Maybe "most" of it does. But the biggest tonnage of cargo that passes through Locks 52 and 53 is eastern Kentucky coal. It is headed west to power plants and south to New Orleans for export. And, I remind you, barge transportation is much less costly and more energy efficient than rail. Thus the Olmsted Lock and Dam is still vital for your coal mining.

Did a little quick fact check. This is cut and paste from Wikipedia:

"Being bounded by the two largest rivers in North America, water transportation has historically played a major role in Kentucky's economy. Most barge traffic on Kentucky waterways consists of coal that is shipped from both the Eastern and Western Coalfields, about half of which is used locally to power many power plants located directly off the Ohio River, with the rest being exported to other countries, most notably Japan.

Many of the largest ports in the United States are located in or adjacent to Kentucky, including:

Port of Huntington-Tristate (includes Ashland, KY), largest inland port and 7th largest overall
Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky, 5th largest inland port and 43rd overall
Louisville-Southern Indiana, 7th largest inland port and 55th overall."

Those railroads that leave the mine headed north are hauling coal to barge terminals on the Ohio River. Without coal there is really no need for the Olmsted Lock and Dam, since there is not enough other barge cargo to justify it. I'm betting that the trains going south are going to barge terminals on the Cumberland or Tennessee Rivers too. If so, that coal also has to pass through Locks 52 and 53 on its way down river, since they are downstream from the mouths of the Tennessee and Cumberland.
