I have talked to parents and children of 5 different schools. The lunches are not being eaten by the kids and it is being thrown away. My kids are starved when they come home. My kids aren't that picky and have always eaten in the lunchroom. What is going on?

Uh...there is no salt. None...Michelle wants to be relevent. The lunches are awful. Obama says no salt. So no salt. And no taste. Moderation, moderation..it never said absolutely no salt and sugar!

My daughter is 8 and will eat just about ANYTHING, but those school lunches. It is awful because I am freaking poor (and yes I work my ass off and am still poor) so packing a lunch gets expensive. I wish they would start serving edible food. I have started sending her with a little salt packet to put on what she WILL eat there. She says even the pizza is terrible.

I haven't went to eat with her yet, so I wonder if she is just making this up or not. This year she has complained the worst about it.

Moderation my ass. All they serve is freaking wheat. What about kids who are allergic to gluten? Too much if anything is not good! Including wheat!!!! My kid came home complaining about getting a hot dog in a wheat bun then the next day had to eat turkey in a wheat hot dog bun. Wth?

kids will eat if they get hungry enough, they are so used to stuffing their faces with junk food all day long and big macs and pop, it wont kill them to eat a pea once in awhile.

I'm a teacher. I feel for the kids. The lunches are terrible. They do not salt anything now. The food just tastes bad. It's very bland.

good, kids dont need to become addicted to salt and sugar at such a young age.
i think parents need to start from birth, dont give your kids pop, deep fried potatoes, and all these processed foods and junk food. and most especially fast food.
you will never have a child throwing a fit to eat at mcdonalds if they dont know what mcdonalds is to begin with.
look around you people and as a teacher, i am surprised you arent more supportive of the childrens right to be healthy!!!
children are obese in america at record numbers.
more so than any other country.
because parents stuff big macs and other junk down their kids throats.
like i said, if the child is hungry enough they will eat what is given to them.
might do the brats some good, clean food might make them less drowsy and might make them more alert to do their school work.
bitch about a little bland food, but then try to use thyroid as an excuse when your kid is 12 years old and 235 lbs.

Kids don't exercise enough. Period. Too much salt is not good. Some salt is ok. Some sugar is ok. Technology is keeping kids on those fat asses. You know as well as I do...if it doesn't taste good and I don't care how healthy or unhealthy it is...they are not going to eat it. Get real.

i must agree with you. yes, technology and lack of parental involvement does contribute to kids not getting out and exercising, getting fresh air, learning how to enjoy life, and also, getting proper sleep.
Which believe it or not, is just as important in a childs development as proper nutrition.
I know that buying healthy food is more expensive than buying junk.
Believe me, I understand this. Trying to eat whole grains and fresh or frozen veggies and protein is more expensive than going in a store and loading the cart down with processed pizzas or poptarts, sugary cereals, etc.
With job layoffs, its hard enough, but parents need to try to do the best they can.
Give your child an egg in the morning, it is protein and it will keep them alert and more energized thru the day than the sugar on their cereal.
Do not load the egg down with cheese, butter or grease.
Boil it, or cook it soft scrambled.
Fish, is very very good source of protein, take your kids fishing, if you cannot clean the fish, take it to someone who can.
Freeze the fish and eat on it thru the week.
This not only gives your kids good protein, but gets them out of the house and teaches them one way to provide a meal.
If you have the land, raise a garden.
Do whatever you can, within your ability and means to feed your kids better nutrition and get them out of the house.
Believe me, they will gripe and moan and cry for a while, but they will appreciate it one day.
They will cherish the memory of going fishing with mom and dad, and they will be healthier.

Hmmmmm. Funny thing. I cook heathy food at home and it still tastes good. No one in my family is overweight. We don't get free lunch by choice, but because it's part of a grant. My family will soon be underweight and malnourished if they continue to serve this crap at school. Easy to say pack a lunch or don't eat it. I bet you don't go all day without eating, but lots of our children are. The grant was supposed to prove that if kids are well nourished they'd improve academically. Well guess what, I bet it's true in the OPPOSITE!! All that crap goes in the garbage, the government still pays for it (through you) and the kids are still hungry.

I agree, and why did our govt cut back or totally eliminate PE from schools???
Well, I suspect it has something to do with the same reason our kids are obese and why everyone went after MO when she tried to make healthy changes to school lunches.
It is because BIG PHARMA wants kids to be sick, and fat and have diabetes and be on nebulizers, etc.
When did the food and drug admin become one and the same in govt?????
See, they add nasty disgusting chemicals and additives to our food, and children become addicted to these just as anyone would a drug.
They research and spend millions developing these additives that will addict people to these foods.
Then, they cut out PE and in turn, children are obese and sick and then the BIG PHARMA makes its money back off of the millions spent on healthcare.
And BP contributes to the campaigns of our govt officials and in turn they turn a blind eye to what is happening in our country.
MO knew little to no changes would actually be made in school lunches or kids getting healthy.
We are under the rule and thumb of our communist leaders.
Not Obama or any other politician, but, the corporations who actually run this country.

I think the school lunches should be a tasty , pleasurable experience of these kids day. I thought all the public schools went to giving every child a free daily lunch.
The thing is for some kids now days this might be the only meal they receive through out the day.Everyone knows cheap food is cheaper and not healthy for you. They should make them healthy and tasty for the kids.If this is something maybe the one thing they give to all the kids for free they don't have to make it a bad part of the day some kids I'm sure look forward to that one meal.

Kids these days seem to have alot more allergies. I doubt most of them are legit, doctors will say a kid is allergic to nearly anything to give them a pill.
Parents go along with it, probably the kid just got a little stomach bug, it is passed around the schools.
Sorry the parents think the food is bland, you say you cant afford to pack a lunch, but maybe you can pack a snack. a pack of nabs, a box of raisins, some apple slices, something they can carry in their pocket.
Not that I advocate for children eating salt, but hell if its that bad, give them a little pack of salt from the fast food junk you buy three times a week.
oh and dont forget the pepper.
