Daycare shut down after infants found crying in storage closet

A Tennessee father is defending a daycare operator accused of hiding children in a closet during a surprise inspection.Advertisement

Joel Coe said he has been taking his 3-year-old son, Brodie, to Paulette's Group Day Care home since he was a baby.

The daycare center is located in Lafayette, 50 miles northeast of Nashville in Macon County, near the Kentucky state line

He said the owner, Paulette Colter, was always good to his son and that she was devastated and misses the children.

"Brodie is just crazy over her. If she was abusing a child, why would my son be crazy over her? He wouldn't want to come here," he said.

Coe said Colter was good to all the kids and that she even built an elaborate playground in her back yard for them.

"It was so clean when I went in there that I would eat off the floor," he said.

But the pictures told a different story.

State inspectors took the images Friday during a surprise check of Colter's home.

Three crying infants were found in a utility closet next to a water heater and electrical box. Investigators said blankets had been pinned to the tops of the play pens.

In a detailed report the Department of Human Services states that there was "an immediate threat to the health, safety and welfare of the children."

Coe said Colter called and told him that the state was shutting her down.

"She told me she was quitting the business. She couldn't handle the pressure the state was putting on her. She in no way put a child in harm's way," he said.

Investigators said Colter has gotten in trouble three times over the last year for not having enough caregivers for the number of children.

Two parents have even complained about the shortage. State inspectors are talking with all the parents as part of their investigation.

Colter will eventually have to meet with representatives from the DHS as part of their investigation.

They will decide if she will be able to re-open her business.

Investigators said Colter could also face criminal charges if they find that a child was hurt or suffered neglect during her care.

Moonshine or meanness - authorities aren't yet sure which is to blame for a bizarre encounter between a naked felon and Unicoi County firefighters and deputies.
One thing is clear. The stakes for Jason Gouge just went up, with the filing of federal charges against the Erwin, Tenn., man.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Reeves has filed a complaint against Gouge in U.S. District Court in Greeneville based on an investigation by U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives Agent Jamie L. Jenkins.
Gouge is accused in a May 20 incident in which he allegedly threatened firefighters at gunpoint and wound up holed up naked inside his home, where authorities would later find a dozen guns, moonshine and marijuana, according to the complaint.
It began, Jenkins wrote, with a report to the Unicoi County Volunteer Fire Department of a possible forest fire near Gouge's Pippin Hollow Road home. Firefighters saw smoke and turned onto Gouge's driveway to check it out.
Gouge allegedly confronted them, ordering the firefighters off his property, Jenkins wrote.
"The firemen stated they tried to explain to Gouge the reason they were in the area," the agent wrote. "However, Gouge stated for them to move their truck or he would push them out of the way with his vehicle."
They complied, but Gouge was still angry. He brandished a gun and pointed it at the firefighters, who quickly left and called the Unicoi County Sheriff's Department.
A standoff followed.
"Officers placed several phone calls to the residence and spoke with Gouge," the agent wrote. "Each time, Gouge was asked to turn himself in, but he responded that he had weapons and threatened law enforcement if they came onto his property. Gouge further stated that officers would be hurt if they came onto his property and he would not be taken alive."
At some point, the officers heard two gunshots "coming from the residence."
"Officers used a torch to cut the gate to his driveway," the complaint stated. "After knocking several times, officers made forcible entry into the residence. Officers immediately encountered an aggressive dog and had to utilize deadly force, killing the animal."
Deputies found Gouge "in the master bedroom, naked." He appeared to be "under the influence," according to court records.
The reported forest fire turned out not to be a blaze at all. The smoke that prompted calls to firefighters was generated by Gouge, who had been spinning the tires on his vehicle, Unicoi authorities said.
Gouge has prior felony convictions for aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
People like this gouge guy should just be shot on sight. They offer nothing to society but pain and misery when they finally snap in public and kill someone.

You are a pitiful lonely soul. Without hate you have nothing! You live to just hate, that is truly sad. You don't belong in the 21 st Century. I refuse to be part of your demise. Hate yourself to death you foolish idiot! You hate life and everything that is alive in it. You are very mentally ill. I want no part of your kind.

It is sad that you can not communicate with another human being without hate and being hidden. No one wants to play your childish game of hide and seek or even talk to or about you. You will be taken off here real soon and I am sure it will not be the first time. Excuse me I have a life to get on with and you are most defiantly not part of it.
