More Sevier County Stupidity

The pastor of The Gathering church in Sevierville apologized Thursday about a mass mailing from the church this week that features bright red lip prints around the words "Red Hot Sex," in red ink.

Gene Wolfenbarger was contacted after The Mountain Press received e-mails and telephone calls from people saying the material they received at home was suggestive and inappropriate. The church apparently mailed the material - which resembled an oversized postcard - to hundreds of homes throughout the county.
"Our intention was in no way to offend anyone, and if we have, we totally apologize," said Wolfenbarger. "We are living in a sexual revolution, and it's mind-boggling. There are pedophiles on our streets, pornography is at an all-time high, adultery is at an all-time high, fornication is at an all-time high, and it's destroying the American family.... Our intent was to get the county's attention so we can address these issues from what the Bible says about them."
The mailing says it is an invitation to hear Wolfenbarger and his wife Karen "reveal truths of what the Bible says about sexual relationships in marriage" through a series of four classes. The class titles include "Sex! What Makes It Red Hot," "A Crowded Bed," "Relighting The Fire," and "Honey I Don't have A Headache."
Jamie Graves of Seymour understands the church's intent, but said, "Why send something so suggestive? I think it was a poor decision to send something that suggestive to every home in Sevier County, knowing how many children get the mail. I think it was very inappropriate.
"I wasn't offended, I just think it was a poor decision," Graves said. "My daughter and son get the mail, and it's hard enough to keep them from being bombarded with what you see on television and from every direction - I don't want to have to worry about what comes in the mail. I don't think I ever got anything that suggestive in the mail before."
Pigeon Forge resident Gary McVay received his material from The Gathering via e-mail and said, "I don't think a marriage counselor would send that out. I guess (Wolfenbarger) has Biblical principles to back that up, but I don't think the way they termed that is appropriate at all.... I've asked to be removed from their mailing list.... By no means am I against the church, but I think there is a right way and a wrong way to handle things."
Wolfenbarger apologized especially to the parents of children who might have seen the mailing, but he also defended the church's actions.
"If people want to be alarmed about something, then they ought to be alarmed about the rate of teen pregnancy in Sevier County. We want to stand up for the truth, and sometimes the truth is not popular," he said.
Wolfenbarger mentioned the church's children/youth ministry and the free clothing, bicycles, coats, school supplies, and food given to children during Sevier County Days.
"The series is not erotic or offensive," he said of the planned classes. "We will take the word of God and teach what the Bible says about sex. We're not here to hurt the county, we're here to help it, and I think we have proven that."

I am tired of getting these in my mailbox every week anyway. I don't care what they say, they invade my mailbox without my permission. I don't care what they are selling, leave me alone.

You guys surely have more problems to deal with than a church that wants to teach the Bible's view of sex. get real. I visit there from south florida numerous times a year and own a cottage in Gatlinburg, ive seen your news, dont act like this is such a virtuous community. Kudos to gene and The Gathering. You need more places like that from what I can tell visiting there.

My wife and I visited this church for the first time Sunday morning. We really enjoyed the conservative message and the interesting approach to real people with real lives and challenges. We found a very warm Christian family of believers and a Pastor that wants to lead others to what God has to say about life, love and responsibility. I for one am glad he got the attention of the Country. I only wish everyone could have heard the message that we heard Sunday.

I think it's a waste of paper to send out the fliers. Does the people of that church think that they need to advertise to get people to attend.
Quit sending fliers!!

The one that said "Red Hot Sex" was pretty sad to see. A church use that to get people to attend seems desperate.
