I was at the seen of the accident. It was very sad.
There is too many repeat drunk driver offenders in the state of New Mexico, especially Taos. Law enforcement must have more sobriety check points, on high speed areas, and canyons. We need to pass a law that DWI offenders carry a special Driver Liscence that does not allow them to drive or buy alcohol. If they are caught drinking and driving it should be automatic 2 years in jail. Also too many teens ae getting alcohol from their families and friends. Anyone buying alcohol for a minor shall also serve 2 years in jail. Too many minors, are dying or accidentaly kiling people on the highways when they are intoxicatsed. How many more people have to die before the Governor, and legistlator of New Mexico change our laws!!! |

Same curve, same scenario, same result. On Friday April 24, an intoxicated 18 year old driver crossed the center line and struck a northbound vehicle coming the other way, killing the driver and injuring several passengers.
Same curve, a dozen or so years earlier, an intoxicated Taos man crossed the centerline and killed a visitor from Colorado. In that case, the DA failed to prosecute the case in a timely fashion and the driver escaped without punishment. Drunk driving is a crime of violence. Hopefully, the guilty drivers will be prosecuted this time. |

In New Mexico, it is not a question of changing our laws. It is a question of enforcing them. I am glad to see that this guy was charged the same day. |
