I'm not buying that the folks on the right are serious about this until they come out in favor of allowing Medicare, Medicaid and others to actually act like smart purchasers of health care, rather than simply writing massive checks.

If the IPAB were actually able to make some recommendations about what Medicare could or couldn't buy, or the Medicare program could actually use bargaining power to negotiate better prices with drug companies, the national health care tab wouldn't be quite as high. Instead, thanks to folks on the right, the government is reduced to simply signing the checks, and we're all stuck with a higher tab.

But hey - at least yelling "death panels" got a few votes.
