The Iraq War Will Cost Us $3 Trillion, and Much More

By Linda J. Bilmes and Joseph E. Stiglitz
Sunday, March 9, 2008

There is no such thing as a free lunch, and there is no such thing as a free war. The Iraq adventure has seriously weakened the U.S. economy, whose woes now go far beyond loose mortgage lending. You can't spend $3 trillion -- yes,$3 trillion -- on a failed war abroad and not feel the pain at home.

Some people will scoff at that number, but we've done the math. Senior Bush administration aides certainly pooh-poohed worrisome estimates in the run-up to the war. Former White House economic adviser Lawrence Lindsey reckoned that the conflict would cost $100 billion to $200 billion; Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld later called his estimate "baloney." Administration officials insisted that the costs would be more like $50 billion to $60 billion. In April 2003, Andrew S. Natsios, the thoughtful head of the U.S. Agency for International Development, said on "Nightline" that reconstructing Iraq would cost the American taxpayer just $1.7 billion. Ted Koppel, in disbelief, pressed Natsios on the question, but Natsios stuck to his guns. Others in the administration, such as Deputy Defense Secretary Paul D. Wolfowitz, hoped that U.S. partners would chip in, as they had in the 1991 Persian Gulf War, or that Iraq's oil would pay for the damages.

" The Iraqi oil will pay for the war" - George W. Bush

The $3 Trillion War

On March 19, 2008, the U.S. will have been in Iraq for five years. The Bush administration was wrong about the need for the Iraq war and about the benefits the war would bring to Iraq, to the region, and to America. It has also been wrong about the full cost of the war, and it continues to take steps to conceal that cost.

In the run-up to the war there were few public discussions of the likely price tag. When Lawrence Lindsey, President Bush’s economic adviser, suggested that it might reach $200 billion all told, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld dismissed the estimate as “baloney.” Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz went as far as to suggest that Iraq’s postwar reconstruction would pay for itself through increased oil revenues. Rumsfeld and Office of Management and Budget Director Mitch Daniels estimated the total cost of the war in the range of $50 to $60 billion, some of which they believed would be financed by other countries.

Add interest. The U.S. has borrowed most of the funds used to wage the Iraq war. We will have to repay this debt with interest. If we include in our tally the interest payable on what we are borrowing over only the next 10 years, this adds another $615 billion to the price tag, and brings the total budgetary cost of the Iraq war into the neighborhood of $2.8 trillion.

So far we have been looking simply at the effect on federal coffers—at the money that the government in Washington must pay out. The next two steps go beyond the federal budget and look at costs to our society in a larger sense.

1. Tax rates are absurdly low. Tax rates on businesses and the wealthy are obscenely low. Every economist knows that high taxes on corporations and the wealthy = economic growth, and low taxes = recession. The CRS tried to issue these findings in a report in November but the republican party suppresed it.
"
"
"
"
"

2. Military spending in the US is obscene. We are spending .54 cents of every dollar on killing machines. We are spending more than every other country on earth COMBINED. The military budget needs to be cut in HALF, then after the Pentagon pencil pushers sort that out, go back in with another 20 percent in targeted cuts. We'd still be spending more than any other country on earth.
"
"
"
"
"

3. Social spending in the US is lower per capita than any other industrialized country on earth. The way to get back to sanity is to raise the top tax rate back to 94% where it was in the 1950's, and cut the military budget by 70%. That gets you to a balanced budget in three years and a budget surplus in five.
"
"

Obama never raised taxes ,he just took it back to the Clinton years rate where we had growth and money in the bank ,before Bush Jr raped the system.

Obama knew he couldnt keep the 4.2%(instead of 6.2 %) for middle class folks,John Boner made sure of that.....thus the delay in avoiding the fiscal cliff......People wanted compromise and they got it but the tea baggers still arent happy ( BOO HOO )

The tax cuts were temporary...roll em back to the Clinton years.....

I don't really have a problem with letting them expire. What I have a problem with is the hypocrisy and cognitive dissonance of "conservatives"...

Obama's spending adds $4 billion to the national debt every day
You treasonous bastard
I read a TIME article covering an interview with the then governor Bush. Something in his words made me say out loud, "This man intends to bankrupt the country." So two wars, Medicare Part D, and huge tax cuts to the wealthy later, the enormous forces of wealth and power are poised to completely dismantle the middle class and crush the sense of social obligation. "Mission Accomplished" for Georgie.
I'm always amazed how willing many of my fellow citizens are ready to act like lemmings and go over the cliff. Or maybe a better comparison is national suicide in the name of trickle down economics.
The rich have been doing it to the poor and the middle class for centuries yet the imbeciles in the majority of the population are still willing to lie legs open and listen to TV commercials of the rich pigs instead of halting the bath of selfishness and racism that the demons give them every day. Damn, America!! Have some self-respect!! Turn off your TVs when your pimp Rethuglicans come on! Stop watching Fox News upside down between your legs!! Nothing will change until the prostituted people stop bending over for the rich, obtain some measure of dignity, think critically about who is really screwing them and send them to hell at the next election.

The tax cuts and deficit spending of former US President George W. Bush's administration were attempts to "starve the beast."
Bush said in 2001 "so we have the tax relief plan [...] that now provides a new kind—a fiscal straightjacket for Congress.
And that's good for the taxpayers, and it's incredibly positive news if you're worried about a federal government that has been growing at a dramatic pace over the past eight years and it has been.

Idiocy is not the exclusive realm of the brain-dead right, although it has an over abundance of it. No, anyone who takes anything that emanates from the mainstream at face value, and fails to examine evidence to the contrary, some of which is overwhelming and irrefutable, and summarily dismisses it out of hand as so much "conspiracy theory", is also a complete idiot. That, unfortunately, is most people.

If the Bush tax cuts are so fvcked, why has your black messiah insisted they remain?
maybe to pay foe obummercare?
I love the blatant racism. Well done. Obama wanted the tax cuts for the wealthy gone, and yes, to get revenue to pay for health care... as well as ALL other federal spending. You aren't very bright are you? Obama insisted they remain for the middle class. "Job creators" is a term used by you right wing nuts to describe the wealthy, who will spend in their infinite wisdom to create jobs... except they don't... because it doesn't work like that. The argument is convincing enough though to get uneducated people to buy into a religious belief... which is what supply side economics is... because to believe it you need blind faith totally divorced from reality... as described by all facts and data. Any other racist rants? Please say yes.

If you want to go with the taxes going up argument, fine, let's talk about what tax that was that went up... the Payroll tax. The stimulus from a few years ago instituted a payroll tax holiday... it was never intended that it stay permanent. The expiration of the payroll tax holiday does what? Causes taxes to go up, yes. Meaning smaller paychecks, yes. For what? Consider what the payroll tax is used for... Social Security... which everyone except nut jobs is in favor of. Moral of the story... social security has to be funded... and being defunded for the past few years was quite enough. We aren't at a near depression anymore. People favor social security, so the tax holiday was ended. Everyone knew this, and this is not a surprise at all. Even the most liberal senators were in favor of this. If you didn't know this was going to happen, then you either don't follow the news or you don't know what you're talking about.
